Hey all, just in the last 24 hours when I do a search on winmx. Either video or mp3, for a certain artist this kindof stuff pops up and I don't get what I want. Is this spam, fake or what? How do I resolve this so I can go back to my original downloadings and searchings. I'll type in the artist say John Schneider (for mp3) and a ton of symbols pop up next to a name and artist of a song not even related to my search!! Over a 1000 of these. Same goes for the video of whatever I'm searching for. Nothing's changed on my system. Used winmx fine the other day. This all started yesterday. People have to no trouble connecting and downloading from me though. I just hate that I can't search for anything. What's going on here? Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

It is probably the same stuff we've been getting the last couple of months and periodically before that. It comes and goes and is not evenly distributed, so not everyone gets it all the time. My guess is that if you were to view it by full paths (option in the search results window), you will find all the files are on the C: drive of various machines. Now, foreign languages will show up first and last because of how the names sort.
It seems someone with a deep knowledge of the inner workings (part of the reverse engineering team) has built or modified a client to intercept search requests and replace the search with C:\ (remember, the search works for the entire pathname, and in the case of the bad hits, C:\ is the common denominator).
The consensus is that a spurned developer and possibly their allies launched these attacks out of anger and/or ego over some decisions made.
A new client is being developed. Until then, it seems the best thing to do is download some .wsx files and import them into the built-in OpenNap feature. Then disconnect from the main network and connect to those networks. If you are lucky, a screenful will connect. Then go to search and try.
