Happened upon this thread last night.  Got MX Monitor installed and configured (whew!) and put it online tonight.

I had nine users with "files shared: 0" put on ignore list.  Wonder how many of those nine are brand new WinMX users with no files.

Five sharing folks connected and got all the files they wanted.  So, the Monitor works well.  Mighty little program!  Takes the work out of trying to maintain the spirit of file sharing.

Lots of nights when I'm not power-surfing the web, I'll start WinMX and just let it run.  The idea is to help keep WinMX alive.

I'd say one of those nine (a guess)
Mxmoniter will takecare of the rest. I'll just keep emptying my ignore lists and be happy. People will always find out some or the other time why people keep disconnecting them.

Cheers :P

One thing that confuses the browse list (forn those who see zero files shared when they are in fact downloading something) is that winmx no longer propogates a change of username. SO if the other end does a disconnect and then a connect (or the network does it for them), the existing connection will continue but the OLD username is no longer valid. so a subsequent whois will get no response (as its now querying a non-existent username) and a browse will get no files. this appears to be a bug in winmx as it certainly used to work.

so, those people who run mxmoni (and i don't) will unreasonably block people through no fault of their own because it thinks they look like leechers.

there are many reasons for avoiding mxmoni to block. it destroys the spirit of the file sharing world, makes it impossible for the mxmoni user to download from someone behind a firewall who's been blocked (thus they screw themselves), doesn't tell people WHY they've been blocked (this is a MAJOR source of irritation) and many others i could name.  i do not and will not run it on my system. i just set the max uploads per user to 1 and let people queue up and take what they wish.

as someone said, all users have to start somewhere, with zero files when they first get going. some are simply not techie enough to add mp3s from their cds or whatever

i share and often find ive been blocked from download for no obvious reason (WEXFORDRAIDER AND SANTANAS ALBUM STORE... please note!).. i suspect that a network crash will cause an exisiting queued file to timeout and the next one from the local q will leap in, giving the remote mxmoni the impression that im a leecher as ive now got two files going (if the remote end hasn't yet timed out the first one). because the block also prevents messaging the user, you cant ask to find out... the typical mxmoni user takes no account of real world network issues like this which might affect the outcome of the 'is he a leecher' test. Given that people wont stop using it, perhaps the next best thing is to devise a set of limits that allow them to block 'leechers' while still allowing through those simply affected by local network issues. any thoughts on this?

Awww come now, how hard is it to rip CD's  If I can figure out how to do it, trust me anybody can
It irritates to no end the same user's come into my queue and I browse their files and they have like  100 uploads going without anything shared  They devise and scheme ways to get around the MXMonitor and LeecHameer for that matter

Or don't you just love peeps who have all classical music, or foreign music but wants something American  Even at this, I usually let them pass, but you know down deep inside if they are downloading American Music they have some on their computer to share

Remember, file sharing only works when people share.  Sometimes you have to teach peeps to share

with respect, many people are not as au fait with computer audio recordings as you clearly are.  I agree that everyone has to learn, and the more expert users should help them out rather than get irritated by them. Yes, undoubtedly there are some people who dont share deliberately but, so what? there are millions of people sharing; a few not sharing here and there make sod all difference. once you start trying to block it, you merely make it harder for everyone to get stuff. winmx has enough problems without also having to negotiate blocks that dont always work as they should.

As to the classical versus 'american' (i didn't think america had a monoply on all other types of music but im sure that you didnt mean to imply that) , different people have different tastes - they share what they like, you share what you like. if you dont like what they have to offer, then dont take it but that's no reason to block them. i happen to have a wide taste in  music but do not like rap - someone else might like rap as well as other stuff i do like. should i block him because he has rap on his site? i think not.

finally, as to scheming to get around mxmoni and the like, it simply proves that these things dont really solve the perceived problem. any system has ways around it - if it didn't, no-one would ever download anythning from anyone else - so it's all a bit pointless anyway.

we could spend time arguing the toss over leechers and probably never stop so let me end with one final comment: anyone using p2p to get something for nothing is a leecher aren't they?

LOL, I do feel like a "leech" at time.

I'll add one thing about the classical vs american or foreign music  I never stated I do not share with them  I do  That being said . . . I have pm'd a few and discussed it with them, and yes they have indeed "unshared" their American Music for me to download.

As far being savvy with audio and technical stuff, that's a joke, my five year old grandchild is learning more than I ever did from and about this computer  It's not hard to put a cd in a drive and copy it over to the hard drive.  Now I've seen people who have no desire to learn.  Maybe most would fall into that sector of the community, but yes they can learn if they wanted to..  Downloading music files is harder than ripping a cd.  Most have to configure the router to get it to work, and I'll agree some won't be able to learn that, but I did with the help of www.portforward.com.

I sit at my computer alot and only use the monitor's at night when I sleep  Most I share with, and the only peeps I won't share with is the one's with 3000 jpg's on their computer.  I guess that's a boundrary issue.
