Thanks to a tip I now found a way to get winmx to run  on recent wine versions with winmx.

The trick is to get some libraries from xp and use them instead of the ones supplied with wine.

You need:  cryptui.dll  shlwapi.dll  shdocvw.dll
You can easily grab them from your windows or get them off the net  - just ask google Wink
Under windows they're located under c:\windows\system32 and they need to go into ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32
(~ stands for your home drive for the linux noobs, i.e. /home/yourname/....)
Once they're copied there you need to open winecfg, the wine config tool.
You then need to set the windows version to the one you got the .dll's from, so windows XP in this case:

You may need to add the cryptui.dll manually, the others should be available in the drop-down box.
(oledlg.dll being the actual patch and needing to be added in overrides for winmx to connect)
Just apply these settings and afterwards winmx should start up normally - just with a blank status bar

Actually there was a reason why I didn't post direct links...

You need to make sure the dll's you get are from the same version and that they match the version you set wine to use...

You may need to look around a bit for the libraries and it may not be safe to get them just "somewhere" on the net,
so if you can get them off an actual windows that would be best Wink

yes, it really helps to get them from XP.
the ones from the web, as well as the ones from windows 2000 simply did not work for me.
I had a friend get me the XP ones and it worked first time Smile

if you do not have a running copy of XP handy - grab them here

thanks for this great info!

I was so glad to find this, it helped a lot. Now I just need 3D drivers to my videocard, and I'll be all set to run linux only again, on this box.

Just a quick note to say thanks to Smokerillo for his (her?) help getting me up and running with fedora 8 and WinMX.  I was able to get WinMX running quickly and effortlessly with the tools provided by Smokerillo's link.

I accidently allowed wine to update and that screwed the whole thing.  I removed the whole package, started from the beginning and got it running again.  After a few glasses of vino i decided to experiment a little and updated wine with WinMX running and everything works properly.  I've been through 2 updates so far, Wine 0.9.49 and Wine 0.9.52, both with WinMX running and am happy to say that all is well.

Thanks to Smokerillo I now own a total linux machine.

I am having a problem connecting to winmx through wine.   I have followed the instructions given on www.snick512.blogspot.com but winmx will not connect to the network and the ports are open.   Please could someone advise me as to why I am not connecting.   I would like to join again but maybe a program should or could be written for debian linux and the other various other linux programs.

in ubuntu You must be in ROOT mode

open  up a terminal and type          gksudo nautilus
 and type in your password

then you get a pop up window to search for the wine folder    you will allso need to  press

ctrl+h

when you in that folder this will show up hidden files < wine is one off em >
then follow nylly examples      < tip  open up second docs folder so you can copy /paste the dlls >

Hmm, why do you think you'd need to do things as root?

All things do work as a normal user and I'd certainly recommend runnings things that way and NOT as root...

There is a /.wine folder in the users home folder as well and that's where the files need to go.
(If it doesn't exist it gets created the first time running wine)

Showing hidden files needs to be enabled, that's true, but this thread is NOT about how to use Linux, just about how to get winmx to run with wine properly Wink

Good News for all Linux users!

The latest wine version (0.9.58) now works without any additional dll overriding.
On the first start of winmx after installing it will ask you to download and install the wine gecko engine which now actually works, so you'll even get a working status bar providing you put the entry for winmx.com into your hosts file manually. walking penguin

I am a happy bunny.

I had given up on Wine on Gutsy, been running a RDP session to my w2k3 server just for Winmx. After all the faffing about when I first switched to Linux getting 09.16 working and then getting the MozillaControl16 fix working I upgraded to Gutsy and everything b0rked.

Just tried installing old Wine on the laptop I upgraded to Hardy and got unresovled dependencies in gdebi. Thought "what the heck, lets see if the latest wine will work," without holding out much hope (I had already tried a few time on my main Gutsy pc.)

Lo and behold, it installed 9.59 by default and EVERYTHING just worked, fired up winmx and even got a prompt regarding the application needing the gecko plugin to run the notification window, which it installed without error.

Dropped the patch in the program folder and all was good.

Then picked up the 9.59 .deb file from Winehq and installed on this Gutsy PC (was 9.46 in the repositories) did the same and now I have WinMX back up and running on here. Not had to go near Wineconfig.
grin

Superb job from wine - hats off that they have taken care of older apps, not just new ones. Came on here to pass on the good news and saw that you already knew - maybe I should have checked earlier lol.

Seems the only override needed is oledlg.dll with wine versions 1.1.14.
I only tried this with the uncompressed winmx 3.53 in the archive.
Haven't had a chance to try the others, Just figured id share that to save some people some trouble.
