I just stumled accross this list of apps to replace those a[pps built into xp which have become a bit dated and could do with a bit extra.

My favourite is the alt-tab replacement with preview.

If you have XP and like the look and feel of Vista here's few little nice tools to make it happen but I can tell you it seems a little fussy sometimes if you overdo it. Remember to back up your Windows also before making any of the changes just in case.
http://www.visualtasktips.com/
Quote
Visual Task Tips is a lightweight shell enhancement utility. It provides thumbnail preview image for each task in the Windows Taskbar, as seen in the Microsoft Windows Vista.
That gives you the previewable taskbar buttons. Pretty much everything else you can find at http://www.askvg.com/transform-windows-xp-into-windows-7-without-using-customization-pack/
There's also the kit to transform Vista to Win 7. I have used most of the software to change mine over and it all appears to be safe by avast standards so I'd say you're fine there. Also I think Vista might do the transformation easier than XP since Win 7 is closer to the style of Vista than XP. And just for a preview I'll even add a screenshot of my desktop

Ok, a little something snick pointed me to for the vidi folks. Not tried it yet but it's free and it's opensource so it already has a + for me.

http://www.videohelp.com/tools/MediaCoder

MediaCoder is a free audio/video batch transcoder, putting together many excellent audio/video softwares from the open source community into one friendly GUI. On video side, MEncoder, ffmpeg are used as back-end, which provides support for nearly all known video compression and container formats as well as rich and useful video filtering features (e.g. post-processing, 3D de-noise).

There's even a page to tell pretty much how to use it any way you can use it so I like that too.

I know its been long enough for this to be a "dead thread"
But i thought this subversion management program was worth mentioning.

Its called tortoise SVN
you can find it here for free (GNU): http://tortoisesvn.tigris.org/

what i found was nice is that it integrates itself with your drop down menu in windows
(much like powerISO does)
so all you have to do is browse to where you want the files, create a folder for them (optional), and right click.
select checkout and it prompts for the location of the trunk repository.
few seconds later (unless on dial up) boom your done.

This thread is here in case you have an interesting or helpfull program for pc. Most likely will never be a "dead thread" for that reason alone. Even if it becomes a dead thread one day, someone might revive it the next with a new program. If ANY reader should happen across a new program that's interesting or helpfull in some way PLEASE feel free to post it here. Just no cracks, hacks, or warez links n such like that as we do not support enfringement of any kind on this site. The program doesn't have to be free either. Someone may want to try it and decide it's worth it for them to buy it later so even post demo links and versions to programs. I think it's very much worth noting if it helps someone in any way. If a program is adware such as it has ad banners in an unpaid version just please say so ahead of time so users will know fully what they're getting into. Otherwise I say bring on the programs, I love checking out new stuff when it catches my eye.

Came across this evening while trying to help a user in the room.

http://partitionlogic.org.uk/

Quote
Partition Logic is a free hard disk partitioning and data management tool.  It can create, delete, format, defragment, resize, and move partitions and modify their attributes.  It can copy entire hard disks from one to another.

Partition Logic is free software, based on the Visopsys operating system.  It boots from a CD or floppy disk and runs as a standalone system, independent of your regular operating system.  It is intended to become a free alternative to such commercial programs as Partition Magic, Drive Image, and Norton Ghost...

Haven't gotten to try it yet but I fully intend to eventually. If/when I get the chance I may report back on it. If anyone finds a use for it please feel free to report back about it.

OK folks don't know why I didn't post this one before but here goes. Good little program I use that moniters IE for cookies. Some sites won't give you full access without cookies enabled and personally I don't like having any of them. This will let the cookie come on your machine so the site thinks it's ok to give access then prompt for you to allow or delete the cookie, depending on how you config it. It's called CookieWall.

http://www.analogx.com/contents/download/Network/cookie/Freeware.htm

Quote
Online privacy is a big deal these days, with huge companies being formed every month to both protect and exploit information gathered about you. By far the most common method used to track individuals on the Internet is the 'Cookie', a small file stored on your machine with information provided by a website... While the majority of the websites out there use this tool as it was intended, more and more are exploiting it in ways that were never intended - that's where AnalogX CookieWall comes in.
AnalogX CookieWall allows you to quickly and easily decide which cookies can stay on your system, and which cookies should go - once you let CookieWall know which ones are unwelcome, it does the rest. CookieWall can be configured to delete cookies as soon as they arrive, to notify you of any new ones, or just queue them up for you to check out at a later date.
CookieWall is currently only compatible with Microsoft Internet Explorer or derived versions (such as NeoPlanet); Netscape support should be available in the near future.

I've read it's a fork project of PG2 and it has signed driver from Microsoft for Windows 7 and it works on 2000, XP,Vista & Windows 7.

Many good tools in this thread and maybe people have come accross more since it was started.

Here is a couple i have come accross

Microsoft security essentials , its free and as good as any other free antivirus  but not for use on pirated windows as it runs a validation during install.

http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/

Superantispyware -     free version is limited and has to be run manually but has good reviews

http://www.superantispyware.com/

I run both of these and Malwarebytes on a couple of pcs and they seem to run fine.

I agree with Superantispyware,
even the free version,
its good points include deepest scanning and looks for more nasties than other anti spyware apps
its bad point is, it is slow, start a scan, go and have a coffee and a snack while it scans

http://www.superantispyware.com/

Malwarebytes Anti-malware is a 1st class malware scanner/remover,
but it dont look for normal spyware that superantispyware would find

http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php

but if you want real time protection normally found in professional versions, Spyware Terminator has it all & is 100% Free
it can run in the background protecting you from picking up any nasties as you surf,
it can see what is starting and running incase theres a hidden trojen within a program,
it safegards your hosts file, so no unauthorised site can add themselves in it,
it also has an optional feature of spotting bad sites when you google, so you know at a glance before you click a link,
all this free

Thank you Blitzen,
Had a look and...
Most if not all of their Anti-Virus, Anti-Spyware, In-Browser Security & Firewalls, i have either tested or use myself
and its all reviewed on my forum,
its taken me many months of testing to make sure they do what they say on the box,
i also make sure they state which software is suitable for Windows XP, Vista & 7.

I know you guys are doing your best to pick out the good stuff for folks but can we stick to mentioning programs we have tested ourselves or appear on freeware sites as otherwise this just becomes an area for spammers, there is nothing better than a personal recommendation in my book.

Although we work hard to protect our pcs there could be software that remains unpatched and there for leaving your system vunerable. I have been using this free program and would recomend you trying it

The Secunia PSI is a FREE security tool designed to detect vulnerable and out-dated programs and plug-ins which expose your PC to attacks. Attacks exploiting vulnerable programs and plug-ins are rarely blocked by traditional anti-virus and are therefore increasingly "popular" among criminals.

The only solution to block these kind of attacks is to apply security updates, commonly referred to as patches. Patches are offered free-of-charge by most software vendors, however, finding all these patches is a tedious and time consuming task. Secunia PSI automates this and alerts you when your programs and plug-ins require updating to stay secure.
