WinMx World News / Re: More Troubles For Intel - "Foreshadow"
« Last post by GhostShip on August 15, 2018, 04:30:58 pm »
I was all good with intel up to about my last of the line pentium 3  1.3 ghz  but then i tried the pentium 4 and  the threading performance was so poor that I was set in stone converted to Athlon Chips and so far thats all I use.

A lot of the new "exploits" are not even real explpoits anyway as they require local physical access to the machine and if an attacker has such local access its pretty much game over anyway.

Researchers have found another serious security flaw in computer chips designed by Intel. Nicknamed Foreshadow, this is the third significant flaw to affect the company’s chips this year.

Intel had created a fix prior to details of the flaw being made public, and coordinated its response with the researchers on Tuesday. Its fix disables some of the features in its chips that were vulnerable to the attack the researchers discovered.

Intel has released a patch which mitigates the problem, which affects processors released from 2015 onwards. A full list of affected hardware has been posted on Intel's website.

As always I am glad I dont use intel anything  :D

do remember win10 is still new and like all versions of windows it takes a few years before a new windows version is actually decently stable (think XP SP2 or vista SP1)..

Unlike all other versions of windows though, Micro$oft keep sliding new versions under your your programs, with new bugs, and old features that WORK removed or hidden in favour of new untested buggy "Apps".

If it wasn't for a few things I kinda need and the pain of migrating years of emails from Outlook.. I'd switch to Debian Stable.

I'm of the "Who cares if they do?" persuasion, it's not like absolutely anywhere you go online doesn't have your IP & a rough location from that if they want to analyse such things.

On adding MXStuff to the links (if it's not there), I'd hold off till it actually is https & I've got the forum updated to a useable state, I need to upgrade MyBB so I can upgrade PHP to something more recent too, the existing forum fills the log with deprecated warnings unless I disable logging them, so upgrading PHP is out till the forum is updated.. there's a whole domino topple waiting...

As to LetsEncrypt, there are a metric sh*t-tonne of online tutorials for setting up and enabling https  most of them for Linux hosts for what it's worth, it looks easier for Linux than Windows hosting, certainly the acme clients for verification & renewal are more mature especially the recommended one.

If I get bored, I might have a poke around the site here and report any links I find broken or in need of updating, though I've plenty of site fixing of my own to do, I have 17 modified forum templates to inspect to determine what was done to them, and if I need to modify updated ones in a similar way...

WinMx World News / Google Faces Backlash Over "Secret" Tracking

I wont rain down on Google too much in this post simply because I never expect something for nothing but as a global company they need to be more transperent in gathering users data unless they wish to start paying fines and facing new legislation.

Google records users' locations even when they have asked it not to, a report from the Associated Press has suggested.
The study, verified by researchers at Princeton University, has angered US law-makers.
The study found that users' whereabouts are recorded even when location history has been disabled.

Presented with the evidence of the AP study, Democratic senator Mark Warner accused technology companies of having "corporate practices that diverge wildly from the totally reasonable expectation of their users".

In the UK, a spokesman for the Information Commissioner's Office told the BBC: "Under the GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018, organisations have a legal duty to be open, transparent and fair with the public about how their personal data is used.

Following its research, AP created a guide to show users how to delete location data.

Like most folks I dont really care about Google doing stuff unless they target me individually or allow the data collected by my usage of Google to be shared with others in a form that could track or identify me individually, thats the line I draw.

True enough, best outcome would be some security resarchers get hold of the code & responsibly disclose such holes, though once the code is in the wild, the bad guys tend to act faster than the researchers, knowing they're in a race.

At least if holes are found they'll get patched, once the fuss dies down it ends up better for it.

I can see why folks may be tempted to go to third party sites when the legitimate alternative is being relentlessly monopolised to extract revenue from what is a medium that has already paid for itself many times over, this begs the same old question that those in business will never answer, how much is enough when it comes to gathering revenue, 10 times initial investment ? 100 times, whats a fair balance that ordinary consumers can expect before a retired product is simply given away for goodwill purposes for free ?

We all support companies that do good things for their customers but when they are simply greedy beyond measure should we go to the other extreme ?

What price good will ?

Would you like me to add Mxstuff to the sites links section ?

Its been a while since I,ve had the time to look it over and I can see we need a roaming site editor to check out many of our pages for old links etc but thats another story..lol
