Title: MAKE PROGRAMS LOAD FASTER
Post by: Ace on May 13, 2008, 03:16:02 pm
             TAKEN AT YOUR OWN RISK

This little tweak tends to work for most programs. If your program doesn't load properly just undo the change. For any program:

Right-click on the icon/shortcut you use to launch the program

Select properties

In the 'target' box, add ' /prefetch:1' at the end of the line.

Click "Ok"

Voila - your programs will now load faster.

I can't get this to work either - the ":" is rejected as an error

As I try to keep mypc clean as possable as much as I can I often clean (delete) the prefetch in the prefetch folder so unless you've never cleaned it or you only do it say once a month it will likely not work for anyone who is a clean freak like I am about mine. Also though and Ace you can correct me if I'm wrong, I thought by default windows automaticly went to the prefetch first to try and bring up a program and then if it couldn't find the object to start it from the program itself. Otherwise with the right text added what Ace is saying should actually make them load faster.

I also can't get this to work. I thought that the '/' should be a '\', but this didn't work either.

Edit: I found this; it might help: http://lifehacker.com/software/windows/tweak-windows-prefetch-for-a-faster-startup-201453.php

Doesnt Win7 do this automatically?

The more you use something in Win7, the higher it goes under the cache. *its a differnt name than cache, but im a bit pissed atm.  :P

Win7 is very good at speeding things up on its own.

Including its own OS.

To really make certain programs load MUCH faster, you install yourself a nice Ram disk.

Install those programs to the ram disk. Set the ram disk to loadup automatically at boot time.

Things like firefox load instantly. Things like photoshop load very fast, not quite instantly.

It does take longer to boot, but I normally run my pc 24/7.

That can be setup to automatically start the ram disk, and load the installed files to the ram disk, from the hard disk.
No need to reinstall, windows expects the software to be on drive Z or whatever. It loads up automatically. Works nicely.

I was going to waste money on an SSD.

Not worth it, ram is soo much faster.

I changed my mind on buying an SSD.
