I had this issue for awhile not too long ago and it was down to a dns issue. I assume when you say that you have no internet you have tried loading a web page and it brings back a a failed page. I duno what set up you have but i found it down to a bad dns when using the pppoe dialer built into windows. Worth a try and only seemed to occur to me after a long spell like yourself, but the connection was still live. Worth a try and their are plent of DNS places to point to. i just picked the one at the bottom of the list provided by my isp, i imagined everyone else may have picked the top one lol.

I'm running win98se, using firefox as a browser, outpost as a firewall. within the past month or so, I've noticed that when I've been running winmx (ver. 3.53)  for several hours (or overnight), I loose the ability to receive/send email or surf the internet using my browser. Winmx is still running, and appears just fine. If I were to exit winmx, my internet connection returns and I can then receive emails and surf the web. I seems that winmx is 'locking' up the connection somehow. Any thoughts? thanks.
