The issue that has got you rattled is a common one and its all to do with the file path your sharing from on your machine, please read this and follow the instructions and regain your anonymity

If your in a rush: Only share material from a root drive (c:, d:, e:, in a "Shared Files" folder and not from your "My Music" folder as that has each account holders name in the file path and thus those browsing you can see it.

I was trading this morning when I got a pm from someone who knew my real first name ("Hi, Stuart!") I had no contact with this person previously, and have never used my real name with other traders. Even if he had my IP address, that's not enough to discern my real identity (right?), yet he knew it. I'm thinking of bailing on winmx immediately. Would Peerguardian or some other program have made a difference?
