Title: How much dling and uling does a chat server need to do?
Post by: Happy Dude on December 16, 2006, 01:54:27 pm
Guys. I want a serious answer on this one.
Last night i was hosting a temp room
In 1hr i dld 370+mb
I was dling one 100mb file.

270MB ON A CHATSERVER?!
There was also 120mb+ uls, but at least 40 to chat.

Any ideas?

That depends on the chatserver itself, the number of primary connections it holds and how much chat is going on in there.

Winmx itself needs a lot of Bandwidth for the primary connection alone, chat servers like wcs, ouka or fxs need considerable less Bandwidth but I couldn't tell you exactly how much.

The numbers you mention seem a bit extreme though.

I believe WCS uses 9 kb up and 8 kb down.
That is reduced to about 3-4 kb up and down if you use the dial up mode in wcs.
But if you want to host a room, better have a 512kb+ connection speed and importantly, an unlimited data download plan

A normal chatroom uses about 15gb of data a month i think
Chatting bandwidth is insignificant compared to the amount of data used by the servers to maintain the connection itself.

So yes, that 270 is pretty realistic if you are hosting a room and you are on primary. (on my pc, 158mb for primary connection for 8hrs)

Cheers :P

9k up? it shouldn't use hardly any up, but download is roughly 1k/s per primary connection

that bandwidth usage for the primary connections is the bulk of the traffic, the only additional bandwidth usage is when you start approaching 100 users or so, then the bandwidth of the chat itself starts to matter
