Title: My wifi connection no longer works, blame the RIAA?
Post by: wa2ise on July 27, 2007, 11:02:18 pm
I know that that's a really long stretch, but I can't find any other reason for it.   :(
It used to work fine, then started getting flaky, and now it never works.

Could you be a bit more specific about whats not working or 'flaky'.. sounds like it could just be a weak signal or a problem with hardware...

I get the error message "cannot associate with access point"

I'm running win2Kpro, windows says that the wifi board is active and installed and working, I can see access points with the wifi utility, and until just a week or so ago, I could connect fine into the various access points in range.

MY system uses windows 2000 pro, and a Hawking wifi PCI card.  No WEP or other security.

The wifi used to work fine.  Then a few weeks ago it tended to get flaky, it would drop frequently a connection to the access point even though the signal strength was the same as before.  Now, it can "see" the AP, same signal strength, seems to try to connect, but the connection doesn't associate anymore. Signal strengths are the same as before, as observed by "Net Stumbler" software.  I didn't install any new hardware or software when this happened.  I can understand one AP becoming unavaliable, but all of them at the same point in time?  SOmething must have gotten broken in my PC, maybe some magic setting that got goofed up....

your wireless configurationmay have reverted to default, which won't allow connections to networks that have no security, double check that you have still got this behaviour overriden

PROBLEM SOLVED!

Nothing to do with SW or anything else in the computer.  It was the Hawking wifi signal booster.  It still could receive, but the transmit amplifier must have gone bad.  Took it out of the antenna line, and now I can connect.  Albeit at a weaker signal strength, but now I can put winmx back on the air.
