I wanna share some music, but don't know how...
« on: November 14, 2005, 12:30:35 pm »
Hi, I use Winmx and I love it... I tried to share my mp3s but everytime people download my stuff, it just says "Timed out"... How can I share my stuff with other people? I download music, so I wanna share my collection too!

I am using XP Home, with firewall on (SP2), yes I am behind a router (Linksys Wireless G, Boardband router), and I'm using Norton Antivirus 2005...

If anyone could help me, I would appreciate it... very much... Thanks a lot.

Hi n510

We would love to help you share your files..

The XP firewall if its on will need to be configured to allow ports that WinMX uses.  You can find the instructions on that here:

Firewall for XP SP2 users

Next is the Norton 2005.  You will need to set WinMX as an allowed program in the Worm protection.

Go to Options > Internet Worm Protection > Control Programs.. there you will see an option to add WinMX to the list of allowed programs and set it to 'Permit All'.

Then we need to tackle the Router.  For this I suggest you start here:

Router Information Gathering

The above link has some information to help you get what you need to forward or open the ports in the router.  It will then ask you to move on to the Portforward.com link to do the forwarding.

Please note that Portforward.com insists that you set a static IP, in most cases this is not necessary and can be done later if you find its needed.  Also very important to note that Portforward.com doesnt realize that WinMX uses and needs to have a separate port rule made for the UDP connections in order for it to work right.

Once these things are all done you not only should be able to upload, but also you may choose to run as a primary on the WinMX Network, which in most cases increases your speeds and helps the network too.

Let me know if you have ANY questions on this information, we will be glad to help you with this any way we can..

ok n510310ltbc,

Just want to be sure we are on the same page here on this since you have nearly off of the things that could block the ports to deal with on your system..

Your router should have two rules similar to these below, except with your machines Internal IP ..

WinMX ....6699 to 6699 ... TCP... 192.168.1.xxx .. Enable
WinMX ....6257 to 6257 ... UDP... 192.168.1.xxx .. Enable

Then click apply, or make sure that this is how yours looks.

The firewall is a bit harder to mess up since we have the pictures, and I am sure that is fine if you followed the directions there..and I mean messed up in the most loving of ways.. i do it regularly .. my self

Did you find the Worm Protection portion of your Norton 2005 and get WinMX added to the Permit All list ok?

If you have all of this set properly and are still not working I would invite you to come to our chat room on WinMX to have us help you there where we can also test you download and uploads..

WinMxWorld.Com_D5718156094A
Copy and paste that into your Filter Bar on the WinMX Chat Channel window.  There is usually someone that can help you with this around but we are all volunteers there so be patient with us..
