connects, but that's it
« on: December 01, 2005, 12:54:56 am »
Three days ago WinMx was working just fine.  Now, it doesn't work.  That is, it will connect as Primary, but it won't pull up any results when I search and anyone trying to upload will time out.  I can also connect as secondary.  If I do that, searching will pull up results, but anything I try to download will time out uploads will time out as well.  I have changed nothing on this computer.  I'm running XP with SP2, and I have the latest version of WinMx.  This computer is connected to a router, but I get the same results if I connect directly.  In any case, like I said, 3 days ago it was working just fine.  I have tried the suggested of changing the ports to different numbers, and the same thing happens.  I've made sure that the Windows firewall was still set to allow WinMx, and it is.  I have no clue what happens, cause I haven't done anything or added to this computer.  I came home from work, and it was like this.  Any ideas???

Who's your ISP?  It could be them, you could also try making a secondary with winmx set as unable to receive on TCP & UDP, see if that helps at all..

There are a number of ports used by common programs, if you pick ones for those that you don't run yourself, the chances of your ISP having blocked them reduce.
Blessed is he who expecteth nothing, for he shall not be disappointed.

HI LilMissFigment,

This sounds alot like a port problem to me.  I would normally be very suspisious of that router, but as you say bypassing it didnt help, so that eleminates that possiblilty.

Next this in that Firewall, you say its allowed does that mean you have actually put ports into it, also are there any other firewalls?

One thing that happened more often with WinMX v.3.31 is a corruption over time, personal experience with that.  Reinstall worked.  I havent seen that in the later versions, but hey its worth a shot.  If your worried about loosing settings of your current WinMX, room favorites, shared folder, settings...  Go into the WinMX Folder in Program Files and copy and paste your 'Settings.dat' file and your 'Lib.dat' or Library.dat' files, to a folder that is safe then uninstall WinMX.  Redownload or reinstall the install 1.9 if you already have it handy and then place your saved files into the folder.  Remember to configure your ports manually.  Then restart and see if its helped ya...

Let me know what happens..
