Hi SwingingJoe117,

This sounds like your ports may be causing you problems.  These can be blocked by things such as a router, DSL modem, firewall and even by not having them set in WinMX itself.

Could you tell me a bit more about your set up please..

Are you usually on a primary or secondary connection to WinMX?
Have you tried switching this?
What operating system do you use?
Do you have a router or dsl modem?
If your on cable what company?
What firewalls or antivirus do you use?

Get back to me and I will be glad to help you get this working..

I'm not sure where I seem to be going wrong here as well.  I had WinMX working fine until it went down, now, I can connect as a primary connection, but no results when I search and then obviously no down/uploads then.

-I'm running XP Pro with SP2
-P4 at 1.9 GHz and 512 MB Ram
Norton SystemWorks and Internet Security 2005 - think I have it         configure to allow all connections for WinMX
-Lynksys router WRT54G - I have security set to allow both types of connection on the ports used by WinMX.

Not sure what else to tell you, but help would be greatly appreiciated

Hi Homealone,

This also sounds like a port problem, in 99% of cases of users being on primary with no search results or chat room list results its a blocked port.

I would suggest that you make sure these are open, and matching in the following areas.

WinMX
If you installed or made changes this can revert your settings back to 'Unable'.  Go to Settings > Incoming TCP.. make sure its set to 'Listen On Port..... <insert Port of your choice or use default 6699>
Settings> IN/OUT UDP > Make sure its set to 'Send and Receive on Port....<Insert different port of your choice or 6257>

XP Firewall
If your using the XP Firewall its impotant to all the same ports in it, for both TCP and UDP.  If you are not using the XP Firewall be sure its still set to 'Disabled', some updates and software changes can cause XP to reset this to 'Enable'.
Instructions on configuring the ports here:
https://www.winmxworld.com/tutorials/firewall.html

Norton Internet Security
Be sure that not only is WinMX allowed in the Firewall portion but also in the Worm Protection, which operates much like a firewall also.
Go to Options > Internet Worm Protection > Control Programs.  Here you will see an options to Add WinMX to an allowed list and give it 'Permit All' access.

The Linksys router
Some folks have had luck setting this to a range of ports and BOTH as the protocol.

WinMX....6257 to 6699....BOTH....192.168.0.xx...Enable

Most routers however require the usualy two seperate rules be set like so..

WinMX...6699 to 6699....TCP....192.168.0.xx...Enable
WinMX...6257 to 6257....UDP....192.168.0.xx...Enable

If yours is set properly now, set the above software up then if your still having problems try the next method in the router.

If your still having problem after this try making a secondary connection to see if that gets you normal results.

Let me know what you find

Have got the download issue resolved, however those wishing to download from me appear to be timeing out.

I have set up on a secondary net connection and set the port for incoming at 16699. I'm now trying Unable to send or receive UDP datagrams on any port. I still receive search/download requests but they time out as usual.

I have a SpeedStream DSL modem connection to the Internet, Running Windows XP Home SP2, running McAfee Firewall & Antivirus.

Hi SwinginJoe,

Okay same things are true for DSL modems, or many of them.  WinMX will require UDP and TCP traffic to be allowed and forward the proper ports inorder for it to work on a Primary.

For your Speedstream, you will need to get your Internal IP address for  the machine you wish to forward.  This can be done by the following:

"You can find out what a machines internal IP is by doing the following, go to Start > Programs > Accessories > Command/MSDos prompt, in the box type in 'ipconfig' for getting the ip of one machine or 'ipconfig /all' to get all the IPs on that network."

Then you will also need your UDP port that WinMX uses.  Once you have this you can go to Portforward.com  and choose your model number.

It is not necessary for all models to set a static IP in order to forward ports.  You must set TWO rules one for UDP and one for TCP.

Once this is done please be sure if your using the XP firewall that you have also forwarded the same ports both for TCP and UDP.  You can find instructions on that here.

Firewall XP SP2

If you dont use this firewall be sure its disabled, as many times we find it enables itself on its own..

last should be the McAfee Firewall.  You can find instrctions on allowing WinMX here:

Firewalling .com

Once all of these steps are done you should be able to run as a primary and support secondaries plus search, download, and uploads with no problems.

Thanks for the help. Looks like things are working fine again. Also too bad a few people chose to put me on the ignore list while I was have these problems. Guess they jumped to conclusions. Too bad, cause I have 150 albums and over 8000 tracks available.
