Please help me with the following questions about all the 3rd party fixes and patches that are currently available here:

1] i do not have any of the 3rd party tools such as RoboMX or Metis installed, and would like to do so now. Do their patches include the original binary or do i have to get that from somewhere else and then apply the patch over the install? Is this valid for all the 3rd party software listed elsewhere in the forum?

If indeed the binary and the patch are to be separately installed, how will one tell which is the best/latest version of the binary for which the patch is to be applied?

2] i have previously installed the PIE Patch (my secondary connection is working fine). Is it safe to say that the V1.9 Patch available from WinMX Group will not have any adverse effects on the previously installed PIE Patch? Just want to make sure.. and also, is the process reversible if any adverse effects are experienced?

Thx

Hi Tso Tsi, the idea behind the current range of patches was to restore existing programs, so they are in most cases called patched versions and will need to be applied over your existing version

Those that are from the original programmers are not marked patched and connect to the programmers sites in most cases so you will know when a new version is available or required.

To obtain the originals you need only visit the home sites or our archives to obtain whatever you require.

The host file patch you have was the original type of redirecting fix but the 1.9 has added functions such as blocking many flooders from the network and will not require you to be updating everytime the cache list chances, so we would of course recommend this type of solution, you need not run both.

If your happy with using the host file solution then I suggest you continue using it, along with Sherwood or Peer Guardian2 to block the flooders.

In most cases the patched versions are the last releases of the given product.
I hope that has answered some of your questions.

Hi GhostShip, and thank you for your reply - it helped a lot. Sorry i'm so late in responding, i had difficulty finding the home sites, but eventually found alternatives. (Would be really nice if the download URL to the latest issue of the original release could be posted alongside each patch?)

One thing i'm still not clear on, is whether i can autorun and install the 1.9 fix alongside/co-existing with the existing pie-patch without ill effect? BTW- i'm still on a secondary connection, and i do have both PG2 and Protowall installed..

Cheers,

Hmm first thing we need to clear up here is that the host file patch and the dll patch do not require each other so it would be unwise to be using both or even attempting to as the dll will remove any extra additions to a host file that does the same thing as itself.

The patched programs wil work with either version of connection solution so if your enjoying the host file solution then please continue to do so.

I think your idea of placing a link next to the patches is a sensible one and will implement it today to help others , I apologise for overlooking this in my rush to get the items posted

Question: How then, does one restore the original host file (i.e. before the pie-patch) if one prefers to use the 1.9 fix?

Question: I have not tried the pie-patch for any length ot time yet, and as yet not really fully comprehend the pros and cons of the two available patches i.e. why would one really favour one over the other?

Hi Guest,

This is link to an original hosts file for Window Operating systems.
https://www.winmxworld.com/files/original_hosts_file.zip

Upon installations of the Install 1.9 dll fix, it will normally replace your hosts file with the necessary one.  However on occation I have had folks replace this prior to the installation of the 1.9 patch in order to make sure they start fresh..

Pros and Cons of both patches..

Most of this infromation can be found here:

https://www.winmxworld.com/tutorials/winmx_fix.html

You will notice on that page we highly recommend the .dll patch as a more perminant soulution.  The biggest Con of the dll patch which may not be evident on that page is some users prefer not to be blocking IPs they cant see.

For this reason the block list we use is completely public and can be found here at all times:

Host file restoration:
The first time 1.9 is run it will restore your Host file to it's orginal state (which is not really that hard as the orginal contained just the LocalHost Addy)

Pros and Cons:
Not much in the Cons section as both concepts work just fine with our programs....
In the Pros section is a big one for the .dll as KM has added an IP Blocker to the .dll which blocks the more important Spamming addresses, whereas with the PiePatch you still need to run either PeerGuardian2 or Sherwood to block the same addresses...

As for the links... Ghost knows a good idea when he sees one....lol

1.9 doesn't touch the hosts file, the original one did because of the people needlessly changing system files in such a way not understanding the consiquences, however i decided i can't be bothered, they want to mess with system files it doesn't stop the patch working so why sould i go fixing the mess "they" are making? :-)
