Canada's conservative government has re-introduced an Internet surveillance bill that would allow the government to obtain information about Internet subscribers—without a warrant. The legislation would require service providers to provide law enforcement with IP addresses, e-mail addresses, phone numbers, and other information on demand.

The bill would also "require ISPs and cellular phone companies to install equipment for real-time surveillance and create new police powers designed to obtain access to the surveillance data."

Members of the opposition have vowed to fight the legislation. More than 80,000 people have signed an online petition opposing the bill.

Challenged by an opposition member about the proposal, public safety minister Vic Toews cited child pornography as a justification for the bill. Opponents of the legislation "can either stand with us or with the child pornographers," he said.

"Apparently if you care about civil liberties in this country you obviously side with child pornographers, murderers," countered Green Party leader Elizabeth May said. "You're the worst form of scum if you believe the Charter’s an important instrument for the rule of law in this country. I'm horrified by this kind of rhetoric. It demeans us all."

The legislation is expected to be formally introduced at a press conference this afternoon.

'Heh.

Other than the obvious bothers that I have with this, I find the arrogant mindset to be the most disturbing.

What are the odds that this is going to be signed into law?  Chime in my northern friends.  My multiple personalities have inquiring minds that would love to know.  ;-)

If the Canadians let this go through it says a lot about their society and it's attitudes.

It seems clear that some scumbag politicians will use any trick or method of guile to mislead the populace of Canada into supporting anti democractic mechanisms that fly in the face of  justice.

Mr "lowlife" Toews words might sound great to a Syrian dictator or gestapo chief  but the reality is that those who support non-arbitrary and transparent justice undertaken within a legitimate legal framework have a moral duty not to shy away from excercising their rights of citizenship, those who refuse to defend their freedoms are already slaves.

The Harper government has blinked in the face of a backlash over legislation that would give authorities new powers to police the Web, saying it’s now prepared to accept a broad range of changes to a bill criticized as a major intrusion into Canadians’ privacy.

The government’s new conciliatory tone comes only two days after Public Safety Minister Vic Toews beat back criticism of the legislation by declaring that critics either stood with the Conservatives “or with the child pornographers.”

Hacker group Anonymous threatens Vic Toews

The hacker group Anonymous is demanding Public Safety Minister Vic Toews kill the Internet surveillance bill and resign or it will release "information" during what it calls "Operation White North."

Two videos posted to YouTube feature a masked man and voice-overs that condemn the proposed Protecting Children from Internet Predators Act (Bill C-30).

"All this legislation does is give your corrupted government more power to control its citizens," a synthesized voice says in one of the videos still posted to the site Monday.

"We know all about you, Mr. Toews, and during Operation White North we will release what we have unless you scrap this bill," it states.
