A law recently passed by the German Bundestag (parliament) requires
telecommunications companies to retain customer metadata for up to 10
weeks and make it accessible to law enforcement for certain
investigations. Privacy measures included in the legislation mandate
that the data must be encrypted, stored on air-gapped servers within
Germany, and may be accessed only in the presence of two authorized
individuals.
