Five UK broadband and landline providers will now automatically compensate customers when services do not work.

From Monday, customers who experience delayed repairs, installations or missed engineer appointments will be compensated, without having to ask, BT, Sky, TalkTalk, Virgin Media and Zen Internet have joined Ofcom's scheme, which is not compulsory.

Hyperoptic, Vodafone, EE and Plusnet have also committed to the plans.

According to industry watchdog Ofcom, there are 7.2 million cases each year where broadband or landline customers suffer delayed repairs, installations or missed appointments.

I say this is good news but of course your service will have had to have failed for anyone to take advantage of this new compensation system and the monetary pay out is pretty low given the lost work time costs folks incur to wait on engineers.

Its a start but could do better.

It's about time. I've had issues in the past, one time we had no internet for 15 days before an engineer finally came to fix their box in the street. I demanded compensation, they said okay sure. Never got a single penny. They will say whatever they need to end the call.
