Argghh
« on: May 24, 2006, 11:57:14 pm »
I've been using WinMX for about 3 years now with no problems .I'm running XP SP2 , norton internet security 2006 and have recently developed a problem up\down loading no new programs added to the system other then spysweeper which has since been removed. I've updated my WinMX to beta 4 and had a patched version previously neither is working . everything appears fine it will connect and go green but I get o.oo on the upload then after a short bit it goes red . I've also noticed that  I receive HOTLIST messages but can't reply. Any help is greatly appreciated

gfe9,

Tell me do you have a router or dsl modem?
And are you saying that your uploads never start? or start then go to 0.00 ?

Hi and thanks. yes I run a netgear wireless and am familiar with port forwarding, I've checked and even tried changing ports on it and WinMX and the download will start but goes right to 0.00

Are you normally running secondary or primary?

I suspect that netgear but i cant be sure, as in most cases its start with the most likely fault and work down.

I would like you to make sure your Internal IP hasnt changed since you set up your ports.

Go to Start > Run > type cmd  then click OK
Now in the box type ipconfig and click enter.

Grab you Default IP Address

Then login to the router and make sure that your rules are set for the correct Internal IP, if its different correct it, and you may consider making a static IP if this has happened to you.

Also make sure you TCP is for TCP and your UDP is a separate rule for UDP and not both.. both can cause conflicts.
Also make sure you have the ports you use for WinMX set to 'Start Port' same as end port and not a range in there.

I dont mean to sound like you dont know what your doing, but its just best to check these things over.

If that all looks good then make sure you UDP on WinMX is exact match to your UDP in the router.

Once this is all done make sure that XP firewall is either off or configured with ports set.  It can be treacherous for running primary if its not set just right and it likes to turn itself on with updates and the wind blowing ...lol

Let me know if you get any change from this..

it's also worth checking Norton's internet worm protection & your firewall, either could be blocking now because of the change to winmx.exe when you upgraded to 3.54 beta

Well I played around with the port forwarding after doing a step by step as you suggested and I changed my IP to static, and I must admit I now connect faster then ever, but the end result is the same . it will connect to a user and then just sit there at 0.00. I set the nortons to relearn and tried it disabled . still no love. I'd appreciate any other ideas
 Thanks

do the transfers time out yellow? or do they go green briefly first?  if everything is in order settings & port forwarding wise it may be isp interference, if you temporarily set winmx as unable on tcp & udp ports, do transfers work connected secondary? if so it might be worth trying some different port numbers, or living with that setting & accepting you won't be able to transfer to or from any user with winmx set the same way.  there are some isp's who have the default ports closed, others inspect the actual traffic, in which case the problem will also occur with no ports, & I'm afraid in that case the only real fix is a change of isp, unless you're lucky enough to find a combination of ports not being filtered

Some time..... does that mean that they stay green for a few seconds\minutes or that the quickly go red after some seconds? Does this happen to all files or a select few? Typicially what percent of the file is done? Did you try other files of the same thing you are downloading? Is the effect on them same?
Reconnect to winmx with the blocking patch :)

"excellent returns on searches" - as in loads and loads of avaliable files? that means you are trying to download flooded fake files, use -user in the search (ie "Something -user") and if it seriously drops the number of results, that was the problem - the reduced results should all be good results and OK to download from

I'd suggest a visit to a chatroom where downloads can be tested using known good files from people with known working setups.. WinMxWorld.com_E3D7EFD50D3D would be an excellent choice, but if this is happening with port forwarding all correct, & firewalls etc set correctly, from good sources, the last thing left is ISP interference, you could try different ports, if that fails too then the answer is a different provider.
