Sounds like your router may not be configured to allow WinMx Ports correctly.

Also since your using XP remember that you also have a firewall there.  Be Sure its either turned off or configured to allow WinMx ports as per
https://www.winmxworld.com/tutorials/firewall.html
for either Service Pack 2 or Service Pack 1.

Your Linksys router is also going to need the ports forwarded, you can find information on that here:
https://www.winmxworld.com/tutorials/routers_info.html

Once these are done you should be able to get search results with a primary connection.

Sean your right there are some ISPs that are filtering and making uploads and even some downloads nearly impossible for folks...

Can you tell me a bit more about your system and who is your ISP?
What router do you have?
What firewalls and antivirus are you using too?

I hate baring bad news... :(

Comcast was one of the first to begin deploying filtering and blocking software on their customers.. from what you saying to me about how its working on secondary, sounds like they have you as well.

In the past its been possible to do some port sailing and fall under their radar so to speak.. but lately its not making alot of difference to change ports.  Most folks wind up going to a dsl company instead as its usually Cable companies that do this to their customers..

I am not suggesting you cant try some ports to see if it helps you.  You change them in the WinMx Settings > Incoming TCP and IN/OUT UDP areas..

Here is a list of several that should not be blocked with the older methods of shaping:

Let me know if you find ones that work for you please..

My user name says it all!

I've dealt with these morons for quite a while now and they claim the port blocking is to prevent the spread of viruses! Believe that and I have a slightly used London Bridge for sale if anyone is interested...

They also disconnect you when you pass their double secret upload threshold, although they will deny it on their customer support and their (lack of) technical support lines. Nor do they mention it in any of their blinding speed and unlimited access bla, bla, bla ads...

The trick I've found is when they disconnect you, go unplug your modem for about 1 minute (even though your internet activity light is still flashing and the link light looks normal) and then plug it back it and Presto you're back in business...

Thats great Sean, most things wrong with a computer are something we all go 'silly huh' at.. so glad thats ok..

I cant say i exactly trust your friend at adelphia about the throttles or blocking but its not that person per say, but the company.. they make it policy not to admit this to most folks that ask.. which makes it seem even more of a con then anything I think,,the lies..

But giving adelphia the benefit of the doubt, there is not alot you can do to increase your download speeds really.  Its completely dependent on the other users your receiving from.  Most users, infact all that I know of their upload speeds are much slower then their download speeds.. which means you can only get as fast as they can give.

That said, you can try adjusting your Allocated Bandwidth, you'll find it in WinMx Peer Network section of Settings.  Increase this to about 10 kb/s Out and see if it helps some, dont go past that number because you will only slow yourself not get faster, this increases your resources your giving to the network also but can increase your speeds to a certain point.

You can also limit your Outgoing Bandwidth, this sometimes will help divert some of your bandwidth to the task of downloading instead of uploads.  You can find out more about what number to limit that at here:
https://www.winmxworld.com/scripts/bandwidth/
This is a script that tests your bandwidth, so its best to visit this page with everything except WinMx and the page off.  Then follow the directions it gives you for setting your limits.

Let me know if this helps you.
