Is there a problem with the network today or is it just me? I am having a hard time keeping connected to the network and my downloads are either not starting or shortly after they do begin they drop out and turn red! Any ideas why this is happening now?

If your running secondary its more then likely a bad streak of primaries youve been on today.. there is nothing special going on with the network that hasnt been going on for a year now.. the flooding of fakes causes lots of these types of problems.. just incase you want to learn more about them have a look here..

I'm actually on a Primary connection to the network but it is dropping out every few minutes at the moment and taking an age to reconnect. It's getting very frustrating. Plus when I do get a stable connection and start to download files they are mostly staying yellow for an age and then simply dropping out and turning red!

That begs the question of wether your falling prey then to the flooding.. secondaries search for fakes.. unknowingly of course and help the RIAA to DOS attack.. its nothing new but I have had many many users that suddenly fall target.. for a few days usually then it passes.. not really sure about the dynamic behind that really..

What patch are you using?
Do you host a room on WinMX?
Do you have any incompletes that are finding masses of sources that all time out?
Are you doing any searching without the filters?

All of those can cause the problem.. the top one can be helped sometimes by using PeerGuardian, some primaries get hit with massive UDP attacks and many of the originating IPs are on the regular PeerGuardian lists.. it can help, but wont cure.. as I said the good news is if this is what is happening to you today, it passes in a few days or hours..

Thought I'd catch you out and post again today!

Well I have to say I'm glad to hear that it will only be a passing problem and I should be back to normal tomorrow or sometime soon. It got to the point tonight where I have shut Winmx down and I'm not going near to it again as my stress levels were getting a bit too high for me! I'll try again tomorrow and let you know how things are going if I haven't smashed my computer into tiny pieces!!!! :)l

Well it looks like I'm in the clear again now and downloading without any of the problems of the past couple of days!It can get very annoying and confusing when things like that happen but, so far so good, I'm up and running again

Thanks again for the information and pointers as to what may have been happening. It's nice to know that for the computer numpties like me who are really unsure of what is happening online most of the time there is a place to come and ask for help. Thanks again!!
