OK I just installed linux and i don't know how to install programs like WinMx.

Please someone help. This thing will not open .exe files like windows did. so what do I open .exe files with?

Any help will be much appreciated.

You will need WINE, it's an Open Source implementation of the Windows API on top of X and Unix.
Simply put this means it lets you run windows programs
Most distributions of Linux include Wine, use your packet manager to install it.
I also recommend Winetools for setting up wine:

Winetools will also help you downloading and installing some necessary stuff to run your wine programs.

You will be able to run a lot of windows programs with that, but I suggest you go and find linux programs wherever you can, I found pretty much everything but WinMx out there as Linux apps.

It seems too obvious that your problems with Linux come not from using Winmx in particular but the OS itself... like you've discovered, it's a different beast from WinXX with its own filesystem and its own basic notions which you'd need to explore and read about prior to effective usage (just like you would with WinXX if you never used it I suppose, although M$ fare has always been more oriented to end users than Unix typesystems).

WinMX or any other specific app apart, if I were you I'd start by reading the excellent documentation supplied with any Linux distribution to start grasping the basics, and using a Linux-related forum to further enquire or discuss if you feel that need

Back to WinMX if you're still having trouble with it even after reverting to the OS you do know a little better, there really aren't a lot of variants deciding whether it'll work. Basically, make sure to have the TCP and UDP ports you're using in WinMX open in your firewall and forwarded in your router if there's one, and just in case make sure to disable any hosts file locking option set in your firewall or spyware remover or disable these temporarily while installing WinMX. That's it. Check the Tutorials section on this site for specifics if needed.

Its always profitable to visit a linux using friend if you know one as I have often found a visual can save hours of frustration on what will inevitably turm out to be a minor matter, anyway I,m glad all the linux users in the room rushed to help I feel confident that linux is the way ahead for many once the initial hurdles are overcome.

I figured out how to work wine but I cant reopen a program.

To open a windows program under linux with wine simply right click on the .exe file and select open with....
Then type in WINE and it should open
If you use wine to install something it will put a link in the start menu or on the desktop for you as well.

WinMx don't works with wine debian, the versions  I tried are 3.53 patched and the version 3.54 beta 4 , and when I run the WinMx, it says "Command Failed" and is trying to connect (yellow led) without any success.
(at this time winehq is down, so I need help)

I don't want to use other P2P,  because WinMx is the faster of all, and other P2P can't guarantee the future of the P2P network (I refer to emule servers closed this week, like Razorback, and many other webs with links of torrent files).
 I think Winmx is the solution, because is a Zombi P2P.
(Anyone can't kill something officially dead)

Is the source code of Winmx avaliable to make a linux port???
Maybe, it's easily to do a Linux clone??

have you added  the winmxworld hosts file to the linux hosts file in the etc directory....
make sure linux is set to view hidden files and folders then search for hosts........ it should be in the etc directory....
note do not over write the existing hosts file but add the winmxworld hosts file entries to the existing linux one......

I added the hosts in /etc/hosts but is'nt working.
In windows 2000 and 98,  the same version of winmx, works fine, the ports are opened, but when I install it  in  linux, the automatic test fails and I haved to configure manually the  TCP and UDP ports.

ok, that means that the hosts file is done correctly, as for why winmx wont work... erm, ideas anyone? lol

it might be that you need a couple of dlls from a windows system, although i found it to work with the wine ones - i did find it helped to modify the wine config to windows 2000 emulation rather than 98 though, although that just made it more stable rather than actually making it work - worth a try...

/etc/wine/config should have something along the lines of:

I am running winmx 3.54 under linux debian testing (etch) right now.
You need to do the following:
after running the install2.2exe

open winecfg (just type in a shell)
add application:  point it to your winmx.exe
set windows version to WIN98 (even if running 3.54, for some weird reason it needs that version)
dll overrides: add ws2_32.dll or olepro_32.dll for winmx 3.54/3.53
close winecfg and restart winmx, should connect now - without the need to modify your hosts file, you can remove the entries for winmx.

For the text bar at the top to work you need to have either IE 6.0 installed (via winetools) or it's supposed to work with mozilla activex control as well, haven't tried that though.
