He said it was a global problem which needed a collective response by organisations such as the IFPI and the Recording Industry of South Africa (Risa), a lobby group representing local record companies.
Grant said there was a link between organised crime and music piracy and that there was a need for effective legislation to solve the problem.
He said 60% to 70% of global piracy had organised crime links.
He estimated the annual global music piracy market to be worth at least $4.5bn (about R30bn).
Grant said Nigeria, with eight copying plants, was the main source of pirated CDs and DVDs for Senegal, Ghana and South Africa.
"We have to pool together to fight the problem and governments have to do more than talk," Grant said.
Hmm very nice Ian , but what we are not hearing about here folks is the international level of price fixing that goes on with 90% of the worlds cd/dvd production facilities in the hands of the big 5 Cartel members , thus allowing them to create false droughts in a local market to control the price of a product.
Also in this same report I read the line "declining music sales of recorded music product worldwide", where would that be then ?
All the figures for this year are steady if not up on the majority of their worldwide markets, this is info taken from their own figures that they push on their shareholders.
And to finish off for today remember folks according to the International federation of the phonographic industry we are all members of vicious armed terrorist gangs, that live off of the earnings from bootlegging billions of dollars of top product
