On the banks of the windswept Columbia River, Google is working on a secret weapon in its quest to dominate the next generation of Internet computing. But it is hard to keep a secret when it is a computing center as big as two football fields, with twin cooling plants protruding four stories into the sky.
The complex, sprawling like an information-age factory, heralds a substantial expansion of a worldwide computing network handling billions of search queries a day and a growing repertory of other Internet services

Even before the Oregon center comes online, Google has lashed together a global network of computers — known in the industry as the Googleplex — that is a singular achievement. "Google has constructed the biggest computer in the world, and it's a hidden asset," said Danny Hillis, a supercomputing pioneer and a founder of Applied Minds, a technology consulting firm, referring to the Googleplex.

The design and even the nature of the Google center in this industrial and agricultural outpost 80 miles east of Portland has been a closely guarded corporate secret. "Companies are historically sensitive about where their operational infrastructure is," acknowledged Urs Holzle, Google's senior vice president for operations.
The fact that Google is behind the data center, referred to locally as Project 02, has been reported in the local press. But many officials in The Dalles, including the city attorney and the city manager, said they could not comment on the project because they signed confidentiality agreements with Google last year.

Perhaps the security is more to do with potential terrorism than nosey neighbours but keep your eyes open for a guy stroking a cat folks

google try to keep the inner workings secret and they have quite a few facilities that they simply don't tell anyone about and the only thing anyone knows is "legally its owned by google if you check the records"...

we all know area 51 has nothing useful there, we all know where the aliens main base of operations is, from there they are trying to take over the world

a shame they don't have much of an understanding about earth technology so can't really improve it at all and just take human creations as their own

What's wrong with this picture?

Seems for public officials to agree to close access to public documents and government agreements and such is not in the public's interest.

reminds me of the recent ugly decision of the Smithsonian institute to privatize their vast resources and give showtime exclusive control over all but a max of 6 major projects each year.  Most everyone that donated material to the Smithsonian did so based on them being a caretaker of the material, with a duty to make it available to the public.  giving showtime a 30 exclusive on media projects is so damn contrary to that duty.  and worse, all of the programs showtime creates over that 30 year period will be shielded from the public with copyrights that will out last any living human.

rise up

More strange ideas are leaking out it seems

A system that lets your computer "listen" to your television to create targeted web adverts has been designed and tested by researchers at Google.
The "mass personalization" system can identify a programme from as little as five seconds of sound.

Each snippet of television audio has a unique pattern, like an audio fingerprint, that can be queried against a database of television soundtracks.
By recording the background sound and regularly analysing five second chunks, the system can identify the programme being watched.

It then starts to look for related information and content.

Good luck to them, this is a simple and workable idea, but one I think will be shelved after copyright cartels complain over holding sound databases, we all know how they feel your ears belong to them.
