Search giant Google is set to launch an online payments system which is aims to compete with auction giant eBay.
Dubbed Google Checkout, the system is designed to boost Google's main source of revenue - selling advertising.

The service will offer some free order processing to Google's millions of advertisers, but will initially be available only to shoppers in the US.

EBay unit Paypal is the market leader in online payments. EBay stock slipped ahead of Checkout's launch.

This is good news for all I think, competition in the online payment market is a lot more healthy with more providers, and  hopefully the consumer will benefit from lower service usage charges.

"We accept paypal, go and register for a paypal account to pay for this"
"We accept Checkout, your paypal account you signed up for with the last site is useless here"

there are a few companies like that already, but paypal is the major player so most sites use it, making it easier for users... this could upset things (we all know if google wants to do something, they will take over)
