DVD's Cheaper In China

This is a logical move on the part of the Big Studios.

Last year, the home entertainment giant began selling selected movies with price tags of only US$2.75 (euro2.19) in major Chinese cities, aiming to carve out a market for relatively affordable but high-quality, legitimate versions of movies in a sea of counterfeit products selling for less than a dollar.
"The reason why piracy's come along is that there weren't enough products at the right price soon enough," said Tony Vaughan, managing director of CAV Warner Home Entertainment Co., Warner Bros.' joint venture distribution company in China.

Companies that once relied on lawsuits and police raids are diversifying their strategies, turning to competitive pricing and trying out new technologies to even up seemingly overwhelming odds.
Warner is also experimenting with releases in China's provincial cities of cheaper, simply packaged DVDs that sell for under US$1.85 (euro1.50).
But in the meantime, it's working with DVD wholesalers to put key titles on store shelves alongside pirated products.
"That's part of the strategy of gradually converting the market," he said. "This is the beginning. There's a long, long way to go."

I think this demontrates the massive amounts of profit the industry generates in most nations, it is strange that they are still chasing after p2p users, when by offering them products such this "Chinese special offer" copyright piracy would cease overnight.

I am happy however that they are taking the bull by the horns and at last making an effort to construct themselves a legitimate market rather than threatening to penalise all Chinese citizens by the threat of trade sanctions.

threatening to penalise all Chinese citizens by the threat of trade sanctions.

 the Chinese government would kick them in the shin if they even suggested anything of that sort. Trade sanctions would kill the US rather than China.
When we consider the cost of the dvd itself, i mean a blank dvd, we might take the cost the same as it cost in our local store, I mean if it costs Rs20, then we consider that that is what it costs media companies too. Companies buy Dvd's in bulk and directly from factories, which brings down their costs by atleast 40%  or by about Rs8 per dvd to Rs 12. But 'their' cost is Rs 20, so they put that on the cost price, so that people think that they too are paying Rs 20. The same applies to Cd's too. If you consider that fraud only, their profits run into billions.
