Problems using WinMX in Windows (i'm sorry) 98
« on: June 22, 2006, 06:28:16 pm »
Hello,

I use WinMX for a long time.
Since a year or something, I have problems with running it.
The program starts normally, I can use it an download files.
But after some time (especially when the program is busy downloading 3 or more files at the same time) I
get the annoying blue screen of death in Windows.

Does anybody know what this is and how it can be solved?

Some things you maybe want to know:
WinMX version 3.53 with patch operational
Windows 98se
MSIE 6.0

If you need more information, please let me know.

Greetings,
Johan

Couple of suggestions, though I may be off track here, check for any available updates for your network card drivers (especially if using it for your modem), check for driver updates for your modem if using USB, or change to ethernet to connect it if you have the option, it's easier on your PC & more reliable.
Blessed is he who expecteth nothing, for he shall not be disappointed.

Thanks a lot.
I'll try to check those suggestions.
I'm using Ethernet already, but I'll look to see if there are any driver-updates
available.
Or else I'll install a new version of Windows

You could also try taking a look at the System error records might show what the fault is, although, being unfamiliar with 98, im not sure where they are located, in XP they are in Admin tools ---> Event viewer

Perhaps someone familiar with 98 could point this out?

Sadly Windows 98 doesn't have any sort of error logging like 2k and XP do.  My blanket answer to most Win98 software compatability problems is to apply the UNOFFICAL windows 98 second edition service pack.  You can find it at http://exuberant.ms11.net/98sesp.html  Basically it's a collection of every hotfix and major update (VB6, DUN 1.4, DCOM98, etc etc) for Win98SE rolled up into one very neat package.
