Educating WinMx users...
« on: July 10, 2006, 01:46:36 am »
It would be useful to educate WinMx users to keep their file names the more complete possible. To make WinMx great again would be great that people could realize what they are downloading before they start downloading them.
For example my movies are called as follows:
(Language-Kind of movie) Name - Type of file - Quality of file...like this
(Eng-Horror) The Fog 1980 DVDrip Avarage Quality         or
(Eng-Musical) Jesus Christ Superstar   Low Quality      or
(Eng-Action) The Transporter DVDrip Freecopymessage

These are just easy example, but helping people to save time downloading files I guess it will help first to raise the quallity of files shared and second to increase WinMx popularity.

Just my 2 cents.

Well, you dan't need to know the type of movie... horror, etc we have many sites that can tell us that, but it could make things more friendly, that is true. Quality you can find out in the search tab itself, bitrate. Higher the bitrate is, more is the quality of the picture. Picture size and file type are good indicators too Both these things are good, but not what you'd call necessary
But by far, what is necessary is that people share their files and more just as importantly, must name their files properly so that we all know what we are downloading. It is irritating to see that you downloaded a song whose name was the same as the one you wanted...
Reconnect to winmx with the blocking patch :)

It's also worth noting that WinMX counts the path as part of the filename & can only handle a LIMITED length,
if someone tries to save a file to
C:\Documents and Settings\Some Very Long Username\My Documents\My Music\ (the default location)
& it's named by someone trying to be helpful
Some Long Weird & Unusual Movie Title starring a bloke with a long name - encoded with Program Name - Widescreen Format - DVD Rip - Not cam offering - High Quality DivX.avi
It's likely to result in an error & them being unable to download it, by all means provide useful information, but keep it brief..

[poor quality] is MUCH more useful information than if it's High....
Blessed is he who expecteth nothing, for he shall not be disappointed.

The only real reason i can see for file types like that is for browses (btw people not know there is a show full path button?) the other info, well perhaps codec for a video, but basically a useful and honest title is most important, for example a film might have a filename of "King Macro Goes to 11th Floor Toilets [LowQualityCam].DivX.avi" or perhaps "King Macro Goes to 11th Floor Toilets [DVD Rip].DivX.avi" the exact formatting isn't really important just the most important of course being to egt the name of it in there and correct (of course) then a few extra bits of info like quality and perhaps codec (may help someone to know the codec although perhaps not too useful)

as bearded said the filenames can get too long - especially when you add __INCOMPLETE_ to the front of it, and the file details to the end of it (the temporary filename used while it's downloading is longer still...)

oh and of course it's always useful to put the language of films :-)

for music i think a basic "Artist - Track.mp3" is best and would be neatest, i notice many also put "Artist - Album - Track.mp3" personally i don't care for the album name but some might find those useful so i think either of those 2 is fine for mp3s... but you don't half see some poor attempts at naming files...

Personally I downloaded movies with the saying DVDrip and they had parts in black and white or the writing free copy for evaluation. I also downloaded movies with nothing written and you see nice heads in front of the screen. Movie remakes (like the fog, narnia, hills have eyes....and so on) and when you download them you never know which one it is. Movies made poorly with huge pixel blocks or parts of audio missing.

In case people didn't notice most of the movies in WinMx now are on an Orient language bases and even those will slowly go down. The speed of downloading is not that grat (I have a T1 and still most of the time I end up downloading at 4 or 5 k/s, anyway not faster than 30 k/s per user). Wasting speed and time to download a movie that in the end you don't want or it is not the quality you are looking for will just send people away looking for a better P2P.

But this is just my opinion.

Those you cant get rid of. They are built into the DVD.

I also downloaded movies with nothing written and you see nice heads in front of the screen.

And you cant help when people stand up in the movie theater.

We cant make users name their files one way. All we can do is suggest, and they might say no. There is nothing we can do on this subject.

Omega, maybe I was not clear about what I meant and I am sorry.
When I type in search "Xmen 3" (for example) I get many results. It would be nice to know which one to pick from those in the list. If you browse me or have me in your search list you will see that if you want to make a DVD with a movie and my copy is not good you will know. There are movies that I haven't watched yet so I couldn't rate them, but on the ones I watched you will read the language, subtitles if any, type, if DVDrip and quality (A+, poor quality, avarage quality....so on).
I remember in the period Narnia came out many people were downloading the old one from me. I knew they thought it was the new one so I just warned them through message and they thanked me and disconnected.

I don't say delete all the movies with a head in front of it (I got some myself), but if I am looking for a movie to make a DVD I would love to know the quality before I dowload it. I had to download 3 times the Transporter and all 3 times it was in French.

I, like many people, selct a movie and let it download and I go away. When I am back I check quality and type and so on...many times I just have to delete it and restart downloading it.

Not a complaint, anyone is free to do what they want. I feel I get movies for free and the least I can do is helping other people....but that is just my point of view.

I think the badly named files (ie claiming to be something it's not) is because of traders, they claim to have something valuable to get a trade... i think traders in general need sorting out and that would stop most of the badly named files

and to be perfectly honest, it they cared about other people getting files instead of just being selfish, then they wouldn't have done it in the first place, so i very much doubt you'll be able to get those people to start naming properly
