WinMx uploads not working
« on: May 01, 2005, 01:17:00 pm »
Hi,

I have a pretty large collection to share on WinMX, but no one has EVER been able to upload from me since I installed WinMx about a month ago. All my other P2P programs work great (Kazaalite Rev., Bittorrent). I have given WinMX full access through my firewall and it doesn't help.

Downloads aren't so hot, either... a huge majority of them time out. I installed winMX because of all the fake files on Kazaa.

Thanks in advance

have you tried using alternate ports? (changing the default 6699 and 6257 to something else in settings) then forwarding.allowing the other ports in case your ISP is blocking the default?

Theres a lot of things that can make your uploads not work

1.The ports you use are ports that your isp know and block
2.Maybe your firewall is not set  up right
3.If you use a router then you must check if its set up right

I had the same problem to so i change my ISP

hey Gzone,
The port numbers you choose are not important really, because there are so many to choose from and the more variety we use the better.  For more information on that heres a link that talks about 'How and Why' of changing.

Changing Port Numbers

After looking at your information I honestly am not sure whats causing your problem with uploads.  I will say this general info, usually being unable to get TCP or UDP is a firewall, router, or modem with NAT capabilites issue.  It can be due to your internet connectin not being fast enough, but thats rare with a true cable connection.

The problem is that WinMX is not able to establish communications through your ports, usually 6699 and 6257 by default.  Changing numbers without changing whats causing the blockage wont help you.

Its odd to me that you have no firewall, and its not a good idea either.. sounds silly but you might want to double check that you dont have any antivirus with a firewall included installed, like norton or mcafee...

On to the modem, its rare but some modems have a 'router' like function so be sure yours does not.  You can find out if it does by calling your ISP and asking for information on the modem, or by doing this..

Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > MSDOS >  when that opens type this
ipconfig /all
If your normal IP is the only one listed then you dont have a router like modem
If you get a default gateway with numbers like : 192.168.x.x
Then you have a router like modem that will need to be portforwarded.

If you have a regular modem and no Network Address Translation, my next suggetion would be to first go into safemode and scan your pc with a good antivirus and good adware/spyware removal tools.
Get Test Tools Page
Starting in Safemode
Once you have done this retry your WinMX, if the problem stll persists then try installing a new copy of WinMX into a new folder.

Hope some of this helps you get fixed up, again I highly suspect an unknown firewall or router type issue with this.. so be very sure you dont have those..

Let us know how or if this helped ya

I have a secondary connection - would port forwarding still be an issue? Occasionally someone does get an upload from me, but 95% fo the time or more, it's "connection aborted" or "connection timed out." Any ideas? I'm about to reinstall, I think.

Yes portforwarding maybe an issue even for users on secondary..

The important questions are these
Do you have a router or router 'like' modem?
Give us your make and model and we can find out.

What type of firewall are you using and what operating system are you using?

What ports do you have set in your WinMX settings?

Give us a shout b4 you reinstall....

Welcome Psychocatt,

You may very well be correct, before you can set them up be sure to see what you have set in WinMX.  You can use any number between 0 and 65535 to set the ports but they have to match what your WinMX is set to use.  Also be sure you set up separate ports for TCP and UDP.
The link below uses the default ones for their explanation, just substitute  the ports you want.

If you look at the link below and scroll down the page look for Westell, then find your model of modem.
Portforward.com

Click on the correct one then choose port forwarding for the model.  On
the next page choose WinMX.  This should take you to a page with full instructions on how to forward your ports.
DO NOT SET A STATIC IP...skip that step and move on to the next...

Let me know if you have any questions or problems..

Uploads " TIMING OUT " People Pissed at me for NOT
« Reply #10 on: July 28, 2005, 06:10:16 pm »
I have the same problem that more than 90% of uploads are ' TIMING OUT "

The I get NASTY chats occusing me of NOT sharing my VAST collection.

I have been using WinMX forever.  I have checked EVERYTHING mentioned so far to NO avail!

I think it is my COX Cable Company that is BLOCKing WinMX by detecting " High Usage Detection Methods " then shutting down those ports.  If this is the case ... WHY wouldn't COX do it on My Downloads also?

This is a mistery ... I am hoping that the NEXT version of WinMX will be able to put and end to this problem.

I wish that WinMX had better Monitoring built inside ... so that you can see what is going on and trouble shoot better.  We are working blindly without tools to show us where the problem lies.  We have to trouble shoot by " Hit or Miss " methods.

If I were to call COX Cable Tech Support ... I run the risk of them watching me MORE and REALLY Screwing me over.  Seems like we should be able to do what we want with the bandwidth we are paying for!!!

Jim :)

Agreed Jim,
You should be able to do what you want for the money you pay your cable company.
Yes Cox is limiting with filters your p2p activity more then likely as they are many of thier customers.

Fixing WinMX is not usually a problem even with the hit and miss we go throught to help folks.. but to date we cant fix the ISPs.  Notice its only the Cable companies that I know of doing this to us..
Maybe the world should be on DSL

Had problem with McAfee Personal Firewall Express
« Reply #12 on: August 08, 2005, 09:02:24 pm »
WINMX DOWNLOADS WORK OK BUT UPLOADS DO NOT

PROBLEM:  After installing McAfee Personal Firewall Express (the free version from AOL) WinMX
downloads worked fine but one day I noticed that uploads were getting timeout errors & no uploads were
actually taking place.   When I installed McAfee Personal Firewall Express, I had enabled the
WinMX.EXE application for "Allow Full Access", which I thought would allow it to work, but as I
discovered, it was only allowing downloads, not uploads.    (This might explain some of the "fake" file
problems that are frequently seen on WinMX).  I went into McAfee Firewall window & looked at the
events & it was blocking thousands of port 6699 "napster" accesses.  Note that McAfee says that its
napster, but its really WinMX.   I searched the web and found several references to the upload timeout
problem, but could not find a solution.

SOLUTION: Finally, after lots of reading about firewalls, ports and Napster, I fixed the problem by
allowing WinMX access to port 6699 as follows:
1. Open the McAfee Personal Firewall Express window.
2. Click the "Options" icon at the upper right corner of the window.
3. Click the "System Services" tab.
4. Click the "Add" button.
5. Under "Program name:" enter "WinMXTCP" or any other arbitrary name.
6. Under "Incoming TCP/IP ports:" enter 6699.
7. Leave all the other fields blank (we only enable incoming TCP/IP access to port 6699).
8. Click "OK" button.
9. Scroll down through the list of "System Services" and find the "WinMXTCP" entry that you just
created.
10. Place a check mark in the box to the left of "WinMXTCP" (or whatever you named it).
11. Click the "OK" button.
