I have 3 pc's set up through a network with my main pc directly connected to an ISDN 128kbps modem. Internet connection sharing works well with all 3 pc's successfully able to use the internet using a Netgear FS108 8 port Fast Ethernet Switch. WinMX however has an issue. The main pc is fine. pc 2 has uploaders timing out and inconsistent downloads. If a d/l is going a second always times out. Speed is variable and surges. pc 2 can browse main pc and searches come in fine. Uploads and d/l's on the main are unaffected with pc 2 activity.

FYI:
Win 2kPro sp4 on all pc's. No firewalls. (yes AV and adaware on all pc's)
Main pc winmx 3.54b4 + 3.0 Patch, default mx ports
pc 2 winmx 3.54b4 + 3.1 beta patch (tried with 3.0 as well) mx ports TCP 16699 UDP 16257
During setup of winmx on pc 2 was unable to send or receive incoming or outgoing.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Do the uploads and downloads on the main PC run to max capacity always? Then maybe, PC2 problems could be because of less available bandwidth. Try throttling the main PC and see of that helps...

All except the main PC need ports forwarding through ICS, it IS possible to do this, it's also a royal pain in the arse & I forget the details of how. It's also prone to misbehaving if the PC running ICS is doing network or CPU intensive things.

Simplest advice: set all except the main PC (the one with the modem) as unable on both TCP & UDP ports in WinMX settings

Best advice: buy a hardware router & port forward in that

Tip: if you use ICS attatch the modem to the PC which is doing/used least

Thanks both for the advice. I've managed to further complicate things by introducing a 'new main pc' to the network - with XP on it. Firewall off, bandwidth limited, and have succeeded in sharing files through the network without the need of the second winmx. Works well enough with uploaders being able to access the files. I'll run the other edition of winmx as 'passive' for simplicity so I can successfully share more than 3000 files.

I'm given to understand it's possible to bypass the mess that ICS port forwarding is using the XP firewall to do it (obviously has to be enabled), I didn't mention that in my previous post as no XP machine was in the mix then, I'm given to understand that method isn't too difficult, but would obviously require your XP machine acting as gateway.

Ultimately a hardware router is a better solution, as the entire network isn't reliant on one PC being up & connected.

If the gateway PC has XP .. here is my not so expert overview of how I have mine set up..

Go to the Gateway XP machine,
Control Panel
Network Connections
Open that and right click your Broadband Connection, choose Properties
Click the Advanced Tab
Click on Windows Firewall .. the Settings button
Enable the firewall here
Click the Advanced tab
Click on Network Connection Settings
Highlight the ICS PC then click Settings
Add two rules here

Application: WinMX
PC Name or IP: Ip of machine to forward for, 192.168.0.2 etc..
Port: 16699
Port: 16699
TCP
then add a second exception for UDP
Application: WinMX2
PC Name or IP: 192.168.0.2 ..
Port: 16257
Port: 16257
UDP

Now once that is finished, click the apply and OK until you have exited out of those boxes..

Your ICS PC should be able to use the ports you set up now (you can use any ports, be sure they are not in use by another program, they match what you have on the WinMX for that PC, and they are not the same ports being used for WinMX on other PCs... for any subsequent PCs do the same using different port numbers
Please note that in my case I have all other firewalls off on the ICS PC (they are also XP) but as yours are Win2K should be ok.

I played around with the settings as indicated by you....being dial-up I had an extra setting in Network Connections. It seems to be working now with uploads at least. Downloads time out but I'm not concerned with that, it's not my primary set-up. I use the gateway pc for that. Thanks a bunch Me.. you're a trooper !!
