Which fire wall do you have? If you have a firewall other than the windows one, then check if the windows firewall is disables, and put winmx on the allow list of that firewall, Some firewalls also require that you forward ports through them as well. So you might want to forward the ports as well:

TCP 6699 and
UDP 6257
These are the default ports of winmx.

You are most probably behind a router. You need to forward ports in that as well. Go to www.portforward.com and see your router model there. A detailed tutorial will be given there as to how to forward ports on winmx.
Alternatively, you can also try put the new winmx beta patch. It will automatically forward ports on most NAT compatible routers:
https://www.winmxgroup.com/Install-3.1-MultiVer.exe

Do tell how you got on
Cheers :P
Reconnect to winmx with the blocking patch :)

I am having just the same problem - downloads will happen, but uploads time out. I have configured my Ozenda Wireless router according to the instructions on the portforward site ( brilliant site! ) and set the TCP and UDP ports to the default ones shown in my winmx. I am using WinXP SP 2 btw, and WInmx 3.31. There has been no change - still they time out.
I use the free Zone Alarm firewall, which is set to allow winmx. There is nowhere to set ports on ZA.
I have the Windiows firewall turned off.
Any more suggestions would be gratefully received. Thing is, it used to work fine  - just can't work out what has changed.

try disabling zone alarm completely to check if that is blocking it or not

there is of course also the possibility that your modem could have a built in NAT router (as well as your additional router) - what is the make/model of your modem?

Hi  - I tired disabling ZA - no success. I should have made it clear, sorry, my router is also my modem - the Ozenda, and I set up the ports via the Virtual server on the NAT menu as instructed on the portforward site.

try going in to WinMxWorld.com Help_3F1FAF500666 probably be easier to go through a few things while you're there rather than trying to do it via the forum

with tiscali there are some issues with p2p, but as for what can be done about it - it's probably best to try a few things like alternate ports etc and see if it helps, the sucess rates with tiscali users does seem to vary a lot from user to user though

Paul,

did you make sure to get a static internal IP for your PC as well?

Please Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > Command/MSDos prompt. In the black DOS box type in ipconfig for getting the IP of your machine. Please make sure that IP still matches the one you forwarded them to in your router :)

I have been getting timed out D/L'ing & U/L'ing for over a week now. THe ONLY change I can think of is opening an AVI file titled "National Lampoon's Vacation"  It opened, but only after several attempts and ONLY after waiting 45 seconds for it to play.  I got suspicious and opened up Peerguardian2 and tried the file again.  As soon as I tried to play the National Lampoon movie, PeerGuardian went crazy blocking sites that were trying to HTTP me and scan my discs.  When I re-booted and opened PeerGuardian again, everything was OK, until I tried to play the file again.  Could it be that the RIAA has put a TROJAN out there that writes someting to your Registry?  I am currently trying to figure out what has happened, but like I said - WinMX was working great right up until then and I run it on a dedicated computer where nothing else was changed or used.....Hmmmmm......makes me wonder.  Any ideas out there?  Anyone else have the same problem?

OK - I am replying to my own message, but I did get WinMX running again.  Seems my IP adress had been changed from xxx.yyy.zzz.12 to xxx.yyy.zzz.11 in my router setup.  Strange considering the computer has been OK for years and is dedicated for WinMX only.  NEVER had this happen before, but think I might try playing that National Lampoon Movie again to se if my IP adress is changed again.  If it does, I'll let the WORLD know!!

It seems like my IP address may be the problem. I set up the router/modem  a few days ago by checking my laptop IP with ipconfig and got 192.168.2.2  and then set the ports. However, I've just checked my laptop and found it is now 192.168.2.3  . When I try to set up the router to this new IP it won't accept it - says Duplicated IP address!  Any ideas? I have edonkey working on my laptop btw via tiscali and there is no problem with uploads/donwloads - but it is just so limited compared with winmx that i would love to get winmx working both ways again.

you will need to delete the existing port forwarding (or edit it) first

normally if you have a problem with the IP changing a lot then i would suggest setting a static IP Address, however with a laptop if you plan to use it on other laptops that is probably not ideal (as it won't work unless their network is configured the same)

You might want to try the new beta patch there are some known bugs (like using opennap causing uploads to time out a lot) however most people can use it fine, the main feature of the beta is that with compatible routers it will forward the ports automatically, if it works with your router then it won't matter if your laptops IP Address changes as it will automatically update the port forwarding - and if it doesn't work, nothing lost... so worth a try

kizercountry,

Since you have a default gateway listed it looks as if you've got either a router or a modem with routing capabilities / NAT (Network Address Translation).
This means you will need to forward your ports through it otherwise your transfers won't connect properly.

You will need to forward the ports winmx is using (6699TCP and 6257UDP are defaults) to your internal IP address, which is 192.168.254.1.
Only if that internal IP address is changing you need to worry about setting a static IP, otherwise you just need to forward your ports.

What you need to do now is find out the model and make of your router and/or modem (yes, it might be both) and go to www.portforward.com and look up how to forward your ports for winmx.

If you need help with that please post back where you got stuck.

Good luck!

Try checking out the one closest in version numbers.
Chances are that the interface hasn't changed much, just select one and see if it matches the interface/settings you get.
If there are not too many differences you should be able to figure it out anyway, just give it a try :)

I thought you'd like to know I have winmx working at last. It was the port settings in the modem/router. Although portforward is an excellent site, and my router was on there, there was a vital step missing from the instructions. The screen shot showed the boxes and how to fill them in, but what it didn't say was that you have to check/tick the Enable box before you click the Add button. If you don't the settings are still visible, but not saved. Seems obvious, I know, but I am a great one for following instructions to the letter, and these were so carefully laid out step by step that I just did what I was told, no more !   :(

Thanks to KM and Nylly for giving your time to this site and helping all of us  :)
