Warning bells are sounding folks  :o

Microsoft is taking security risks with its forthcoming Vista operating system, says software firm McAfee.
The security specialist has taken out a full-page advert in the Financial Times to alert readers to its concerns.

It feels the tech giant is increasing risks of hacks and viruses by locking out third-party software firms from its in-built security system for Vista.
The row also involves the European Union, which is watching Vista's release for signs of monopoly abuse.

Attacks on the kernel of an operating system - such as malicious drivers for peripherals and rootkit hacks - have become commonplace among users of Microsoft's Windows XP.
Microsoft is locking security firms - and other software developers - out of the core in an effort to prevent kernel attacks on Vista.
McAfee and Symantec have both stated that the core security systems for Vista have already been breached by hackers.

The model MS envisage of taking all the responsibility for machine security is flawed in a massive way as any single breach then hits all machine worldwide, hardly clever to put 90% of the worlds eggs in one basket.

{rant}

i have -still- yet to find a reason to 'upgrade' my wintendo past windows 2000; it works, doesnt look like a playskool toy... or worse... macos X, and it allows me to use 'hacked' drivers so i can connect 'obsolete' peripherals like my 9600x9600 dpi parallel port scanner (no im not kidding... at that resolution you can analyse in detail the individual dust particles that have collected on the glass... the higest res 'modern' usb scanner ive seen is 1200x1200 dpi) or obscure peripherals like the sony eye toy... (which is supposedly only supposed to work with the ps2... makes a great webcam) and all the while being a very stable (if you take some time) and customisable platform that has no problem with 'modern' hardware either....

(and dont even get me started about the advantages of using linux)

{/rant}

my apologies to the forum readers for the rant but the more i learn about vista the more it drives me nuts....

there is no reason to upgrade to vista..........the fact its a piece of shit is beside the point......................
when dealing with computers i try to use the old philsophy of " if it aint broke dont fix it"..............
if your current o/s does all you need it to do they why change................
cant wait for the microsoft spin doctors to deal with that issue lol

true... but its not so much the 'spin doctor' approach than it is the 'we dont support it anymore' approach (take windows 95 for example... many users even find -that- os useful), and when M$ ceases support they also cease the releases of security patches... granted 95 isnt exactly a mainstream os but when a worm that there is no patch for eats your data.. well...

now put that in the context of win2k... when they stop releasing security updates for it what happens to the many businesses and ppl that still use it?

as a side note there -are- still a few security updates being released for windows 95... they are all 3rd party but can be had at www.windizupdate.com ... works a lot better than the standard windowsupdate site (for any version) ;)

the only reason I have a windows system is because I need it for working on windows software (pretty hard to work on a patch for winmx using only wine for example...) and then only my workstation has it on

I used to use windows 2000, and flat refused to ever touch XP - and have never been forced to use it, never do use it... it stays within vmware

I now use windows 2003, purely because it is faster booting than 2000 - it takes long enough to reboot without the extra delay of 2000... lol

Also judging by what I've seen so far (and going by the assumption that everything they messed up in XP they seem to be continuing down that road... just look at XP SP2!) I think I can safely say that I will never use vista on any of my systems either (except inside vmware where extra bug finding is done on every OS)
