Switching from 56k to DSL .
« on: September 13, 2005, 08:38:31 am »
Hi everyone. I have a question about switching from 56k dialup connection to DSL, which I will be doing in a few days. I have WinMX 3.53 (secondary user) installed with widows XP V. 2002 & Service pack 2. I use Moni and and peerGuardian.  And have never had any problems with WinMX.
My question is, after i get DSL do I need to uninstall WinMX, download it again and set it up for DSL, or can i do that with the WinMx i already have? And if so, how?
Thanks

Hey SumChic1963,

No you dont need to uninstall your WinMX in order to set up of DSL.

There are a few things you might want to have a look at either before or maybe better after you get your DSL installed and your modem running.

Some DSL modems require you to forward ports in order for WinMX to work right, obviously you cant do this until its up and running, but here is the link you will need to read if yours requires it.

Info to Forward Ports in the Modem
Firewall for SP2

Your Bandwidth settings may need to be changed also, you can go here, agian this needs to be done after you have DSL running, its a test of your speeds and then it will tell you what your best Bandwidth settings should be.

Bandwidth Test

This should get you started .. and as usual if you have any other questions post them here or visit us in the room on WinMX for live help..

WinMXWorld.com_ numbers may change..

Good luck and congrats on getting DSL

and as for the reported speed (ie. what i think you are refering to... making it show DSL or 56k or whatever next to your name, that is in settings :))

Thanks, me here and KM. I have saved the links you have listed for me to use. I will get my modem tomorrow, but the phone line won’t be ready until Thursday. I live way out in the country so DSL in just now available here.  I’m really excited and just want everything to go smoothly;  as I will be installing the modem and software myself. They say it’s very simple, but I know me. Wish me luck.

KM, I see in settings where I will change to DSL. So that’s all I need to do is just click on DSL? Also, will I need to change to primary connection on the Networks page? The provider told me that what I’m getting is actually called DSL lite. It’s only about 20 times faster than dial-up. That’s all that’s available to me now but in a few months they should be doing some upgrading and I can get  1 point (something) … (can’t remember what he told me),  which is 100 times faster than dial-up. But  that’s what they told me about DSL becoming available here 9 yrs ago.  Oh well, I’m just tickled to be getting  what I’m getting.

One thing more. I feel silly asking because, I’m sure this is something that everyone knows but me. me here, you said I could “visit in the room on WinMX for live help” , could you tell me where the room is? Is it in the channels available in chat on WinMX? And what’s the name? WinMx World? Sorry, not very smart about this stuff.

Again, thanks me here and KM. I appreciate all your help.

Yes we are on the channel list of the WinMX Peer Networks..
If we have to reboot sometimes those numbers might change however the name is always on the list.. you can copy and paste this into your channel filter of WinMX and click Join...if the numbers are different just search with the filter for the name :>

And please... we are all learning something so never worry about asking questions ...
