The Peer guardian servers have been taken over by a staff member! the ban id servers are no longer under their control and may be unsafe! They have moved to a temporary site here at sourceforce! http://peerguardian.sourceforge.net/index.html

Can I laugh at this yet?  It may have happened, and if so, it surely displays a major lack of security, by someone trying to offer security - quite laughable if you ask me!

Thank goodness I don't use peerguardian...

So, does Peer Guardian have a lawyer on retainer, so as to take action against this "staff member" who has hijacked the Peer Guardian servers?  Furthermore, what plans are being implemented so that other "staff members" don't get upset in the future and hijack Peer Guardian?

Can't they (the Legit Peer Guardian staff) just block the offending idiot's IP addy?  Seems to me that if they have physical access to the Peer Guardian servers that this would be a possibility.  Also, why should anyone ever trust Peer Guardian again?

Oh wait, that's right - I don't care, because I don't use Peer Guardian!

You are really trouble shooters and believe everything, where from comes this whisdome. Do you no it yourself comes in the room for 1 sec put a quick message in the hope everyone quits there room. NOT Believe what you want to believe if all what is said already about winmx than winmx wouldn't exist any longer. Look at Napster that was true and doesn't exist any more but winmx is still here. YOU are troubleshooters.

looks like a common problem, one of the disadvantages of having a group of people all having roughly equal control over something is that if they get upset with each other, you end up with both accusing the other of things...

you'll probably find that both sides attempted to take control of the main website for themselves, both tried to lock the other out, and in the end one ended up with the server, and the other without... and so they both go accusing the other of something they probably both did, heh

but of course you'll never know what really happened... someone probably slept with someone elses girlfriend or something

Ok, so as per http://methlabs.org/projects/ some members "revolted," or some fluffy stuff like that.  Once again, I'm glad I don't use Peer Guardian!

i would never use it anyway, i dont see the point in paying for an internet connection if you want to block most of the internet anyway

Personally, I see the point in it, but I take things a step further.  Rather than banning single IP's, I ban entire IP ranges (but only if someone in that IP block "grows a brain" and tries to do anything "fishy" to my systems).

So far, I've blocked mainly the APNIC ranges, as this seems to be a big source of the "fishy" activity.  But, I've also banned some ARIN and RIPE ranges too, with just a tiny handful of LATNIC ranges tossed in the mix.

Keeps the idiots from having a second shot at me, and keeps me "safe as can be," considering no firewall is absolutely 100% fool-proof and hack/exploit-proof.

With Dynamic IP addressing used in some DSL, and almost every dial-up service, it's too easy for some idiot to get a new IP and try again.  So, I just ban their ISP's IP ranges.  Screw banning single IP's, lemme cut myself off from the world, one ISP at a time.

I came across this news on p2pnet today. I don't use PG2 either.
Heres a link to the news story.

Development of PeerGuardian will resume, and the website will temporarily move to http://peerguardian.sourceforge.net/ until a new domain is registered and a new server found. The intention of the group is to register a non-profit organisation to handle the development of Methlabs applications and to promote open source projects that aid both security, privacy and peer-to-peer technologies, in order to prevent a repeat of this incident.

Quote
The team wish all their users the best through this difficult time, but promise that development will continue. Please visit http://peerguardian.sf.net/ for news as we make progress. All other sites, including http://methlabs.org and http://blocklist.org, are under control of the rogue member and should not be trusted for safe updates to our applications or lists.

A new build of PeerGuardian will be released soon to reflect these changes. Until then we ask you to continue using Beta 6a but with caution as the update servers are no longer under our control.

Ok after talking to Methlabs personally about how i can help out, they have told me that the site Blocklist.org has been hijacked and someone has taken over their servers and also ran away with funds (thats why i have offered to donate space and bandwidth to them).

For now everyone please dont update your Peer Guardian from MethLabs, instead update it from our good friends at bluetack until further notified.

To download the blocklist from BlueTack please use the following link:

http://www.bluetack.co.uk/modules.php?name=Content&pa=showpage&pid=1

and to check out Bluetack FAQ's about blocklists goto:

http://www.bluetack.co.uk/forums/modules.php?name=FAQ&myfaq=yes&id_cat=6&categories=Blacklists+FAQ

Anyone who can donate a bit of space and bandwidth please contact me so i can contact them to get into cantact with you.

or visit them on IRC
