Re: WinMx on recent wine versions
« Reply #20 on: May 15, 2009, 06:45:31 pm »
I am on Ubuntu with Wine 1.0.1 and I put the XP .dll files in the correct folder & did winecfg.   However, winmx still won't start up and has the yellow flashing light.  Any ideas?  I got it to work with an older version of Wine about 2 yrs ago (0.9.6 I think or something like that) but apparently I don't need an old version of wine any longer?  Any help would be much appreciated!   I'm an old winMX user from WAY back. I used to use winMX a lot in the last ten years, so happy to see it still going strong!  It's so much fun!   :)     Anyway, any help would be great.

you also need to add the patch from the installer.

hey thanks Forest, that works!   I'm noticing something though:  years ago I could put in search terms & get hundreds if not thousands of hits. Now I'm lucky to get 2-3.  Is that just the way it is?  Can I tweak my setup somehow?  I'm on a secondary connection for one and it's slower than the old days 4 sure, but OK.  Do I need to put files in my Library for things 2 work better/faster?  Just curious.  Thanks so much 4 answering!

No need for that anymore!!!!

The ONLY file you need to put in and add dll override for is the patch, i.e. oledlg.dll.

No search results sounds more like a "normal" port problem to me...

I get search results just fine.

And only a few compared to thousands before depends on which patch you was using too. This new patch filters fakes out of your searchs so the files you are seeing actually really one's. And i run Winmx in wine on primary 24/7. i think it was on 270hours last time i looked. An no problems here.

Last night, the search results started to get better and more volume.  It seems to be working properly now.

Just a warning to anyone running winmx with wine:  wine 1.1.25 and 1.1.26 currently do NOT work with winmx, the latest version you should install is 1.1.24

i installed 1.1.31 today and kept getting the error that winmx needed to close upon start up. I was reading about a half-life2 error that brought up nearly the same error code and the solved it by running

wineprefixcreate

Just load a console and enter that command. it says its not required anymore but well it seems for at least winmx and half life it still is :-D

**oh and btw, in my ubuntu i now have no box's hiding behinf the client(if you use it you know this bug well) and everything looks a hell of alot neater and tidyer :-D**

That solves nothing for me - never did.

I've tried with a new ~/.wine, tried with or without prefixcreate and several other things I could think of.

Anyway, I've been having issues ever since wine 1.1.25 and have in fact filed a bug about it after retracing it.

I'm currently running a git version of 1.1.29 with the patch reversed, will do the same for 1.1.31 later.

I'm guessing it might be x_64 related as snick said he never had any problems at all

Here's the patch that breaks it for anyone interested:

It's probably something with my setup - it works fine with that particular patch removed and not at all with it in :S

And it's only winmx that's affected too - other apps work fine as well

Hi   I have 2 machines  P4 single core  2.0GB ram          P4 dual core  3.0 GB ram
I would like to upgrade my wine version from 0.9.64 to a newer one in hopes of picking up a little smoother running winmx.
Can anyone recommend which wine version would be best for running winmx on opensuse 11.0?
Machine # 1 - Asus Prime Z390A, i7-9700k 3.6GHz, 32.0 GB ram, openSUSE Leap 15.0 64-bit, KDE Plasma 5.12.8
Machine # 2 - Asus P8Z77-V Deluxe, i7-3770k 3.5GHz, 16.0 GB ram, opensuse Tumbleweed KDE Plasma 5.17.0

Well I wouldn't know about SuSe, haven't been running that since 9.3...

Wine 1.0.1 is marked as stable though and there are no problems with it in regard to winmx that I'm aware of, so that's probably a safe bet.
As for the newer builds theyr'e marked as development versions, so bad things sometimes happen.
On the other hand it might run just fine with the latest version, you never know till you try.

My own problems with the latest versions might just be something in my special circumstances, as you can see above others don't seem to have any troubles with it.

I would just try the latest version and if that isn't working for you I'd go with 1.0.1 directly from winehq.

PS: something else I noticed is that they seem to have changed gecko versions, so if you get error messages about that it might be best to rename your old ~/.wine folder and let it build a new one..

This is a comment about tiny4Eva's  post on page 2 re:  wineprefixcreate.
I just installed  openSuse 11.2  64 bit version
I compiled wine 1.0  32 bit and installed winmx
No problems installing either wine or winmx, however Winmx would not connect
and I had no eagle patch info in the winmx update bar.
I read Tiny4Eva's post and tried running  wineprefixcreate in a terminal
Restarted winmx and it connected.
Don't know if this will help anyone, in the future, hope so.
