Is there no limits to the greed and moral corruption shown by these "people"
http://www.p2punite.org/?q=node/838I thought I'd seen everything, from copyright extension lobbying, asking for tax credits for A&R costs, crazy attacks on ISPs to demands that British police spend more time fighting P2P and less time fighting crime. This story, however, really shows the level to which Peter Jamieson and his flying monkeys crew will stoop.
From a letter to musicians promoting a joint seminar by Own It and The BPI, "You want audience adoration, respect from your peers and the music industry and the chance to keep your name and music in the public psyche for years to come. However, success in the music industry comes from a series of partnerships between musicians and industry. Such partnerships most likely involve a musician exchanging their intellectual property rights for the expertise that enables them to distribute and sell their music whether on or off line." (emphasis added)
Whoa, hold the phone guys. Signing away intellectual property rights isn't such a bright idea for a young musician, and certainly not so smart given the radical changes to the music business which are happening almost daily.
Anyone signing away the rights to any of their work is likely to regret it for the rest of their lives, its a better idea to licence it and keep the flexibility of having a portfolio of royalties and other income that will be a great investment for the future, the lifespan of music is not measured in how many weeks it stays in the charts, although some have been in the top 100 for over ten years amazingly enough, imagine if you had signed those rights away to some selfish company who wouldnt help you if you where drowning as it would benefit them more in free publicity if you had an accident.
My message to Artists is direct marketing to the consumer and get a better deal.
The Cartel will only be able to steal from artist and consumer alike and dictate the market while they have control of the talent pool, and thats what its all about,
they want control of
your music, licence by all means, sell nothing to these "Suited Middlemen", ever.
