I'm able to download files but have yet to find a way to upload files. I have a number of files sitting in my (shared) upload folder but, if I search for them in WinMX, I can't see them. On the rare occasion when I've seen someone try to download from my shared folder, it appears to time out and they drop. I have a DSL connection from AT&T (PacBell/SBC) that is limited to 384 up and 384 down. I've tried using the 'Primary' setting but then I can't even search! Maybe someone has some advice? Here is all (I think) of the relevant info:

ISP: PacBell/SBC/AT&T Connection: DSL - 384 Up/384 Down Router: 2Wire (purchased from SBC)
Firewall Settings: Allowed Applications = WinMX, Port 6699 open for TCP, Port 6257 open for UDP

System CPU/Memory, etc: Good and Fast OS: Win2000 Pro

WinMX: Ver 3.54 beta 4 with patch from Winmxworld.com
WinMX Settings
Networks:   Connection type = Secondary.
(When I change to ‘Primary,’ I can’t get WinMX to work at all – search gets no results, nothing uploads, nothing downloads.

Internet Connection:   DSL
Outgoing TCP Connections: Don’t use a proxy server
Incoming TCP Connections: Listen on port 6699
In/Out UDP Packets:   Send and receive UDP datagrams on port 6257

Does everything work as it should when your on secondary?

One more question tho

Aside from the one above.. What firewalls, Antivirus, and protective software do you have 'installed' (even if disabled)?

Are you using the 2wire as a modem as well?

when you can download but others cant upload off of you this is normally a firewall problem, you have to give WinMX full access through your firewall, not just use as client but use as server too if you have this facility, because thats where the incoming uploads connect through.

Hi I am new to the site as of yesterday and I am unable to download any song at all. I have turned off my firewall to except WinMX I have tried changing my ports and it still does nothing at all and I am getting discouraged!! HELP!!

Hi Kelli,

Welcome to the site and wow.. ok lets get you fixed up.

First thing Id like to do is have you install a new Patch, simplly to make sure you are up to date and have the patch that filters fakes from searches.. those are 99% of the reason downloads turn red.

When you get here the Home page has the download for WinMX v3.54.

There is a link near the top left if your using WinMX v3.53 then please select that, look on the list of available files for 'Various WinMX Versions + Patch' and download this. Save it to your PC. Then run the patch choosing the correct version.

Once this is done try WinMX.. see about downloads. If your still getting alot of time outs downloading post back to us here for more settings help..

Thank you all for the help. Here's what I've found/done:
I already had the patch installed but ran it again anyway. I see 'Patch Operational' in my WinMX 3.54b.
In my router's firewall settings, I had another computer registered as the WinMX host. That's been corrected.
Here are my firewall's 'advanced settings.' Can someone tell me if any of these need to change?

None of these are checked.

Inbound and Outbound Control
Outbound     Inbound
HTTP        Remote Mgmt
HTTPS        NetBIOS

All of these are checked except NetBIOS (both Outbound and Inbound).

Instructions
Limiting data traffic may disable support for hosted applications that require inbound communications such as Web servers, games, or Internet chat programs. All data traffic will continue to be scanned by the firewall for known hacker attacks.

Attack Detection
"Check to detect the types of attacks below":
Excessive Session Detection
TCP/UDP Port Scan
Invalid Source/Destination IP address
Packet Flood (SYN/UDP/ICMP/Other)
Invalid TCP Flag Attacks (NULL/XMAS/Other)
Invalid ICMP Detection
Miscellaneous
All of the above are checked except "Excessive Session Detection."

Victim, I didn't answer your question; yes, when I'm in Secondary mode, all download operations seem to work but no upload.
Max, I think you hit on the problem. After making this computer my WinMX host and changing to 'Primary' mode, I now see someone uploading a file from my shared folder; they've been connected for a couple of minutes - no drop. I guess this is the woohoo! moment.

One thing still puzzles me: If I do a search for a file that is in my shared folder (and I have not found it anywhere else on WinMX), shouldn't it show up in my search results? Or do I need to wait for a network-wide indexing process before it can show up?

To the folks in the 'Sharing with Non-Sharers' thread ...... some of us are trying to share but not finding WinMX to be terribly intuitive. I guess that's why you hear woohoo! when we get it to work.

when you search for files, if you have those files you will not normally show up on your own search results, WinMX is designed that way to minimise false results, it ignores what you have and will look at files/users available.

Your own results are not suppose to show on results. Think about it:
You have a 1gb incomplete with 47% done and you search for sources and the only hit you get is yourself

Although you can go into chatrooma and browse yourself if you want to.
