unfair?
« on: February 19, 2007, 01:17:18 pm »
Hello,
I have been downloading movies recently. My question/problem is, I put every movie I download into my library for others to download off me. It takes me usually 2 days or so to get a movie, often it starts, d/l's some, and goes back to que. All the while, my upload slots (6) are constantly full with folks. Those uploads seem to fly. Usually, 10 to 20 movies get u/p from me for every 1 I get. Why? I share willingly. I read about joining "movie" groups, but there are so many. How do you choose? Do you "have" to join a group to get faster d/ls?
It doesn't seem fair.
If anyone can help me out, I would appreciate it. I mostly d/l new movies or good older ones. NO porn or trash.....

I'm not a big chatter online, no time for that. I don't want to have to "chat" to get movies.
Thanks
Enduroman

Some folks use the 0 of 0 upload hack to block uploads and only allow their friends to download from them.
It's absolutely disgusting and such people are absolutely 101% leechers. 0 files can atleast be forgiven or else people have genuine reasons sometimes for not sharing. But 0 of 0 is not.

You don't need to join groups...
People usually give invites to people on their queue so that you come to their room and they start you...
You can accept it or not accept it as it suits you. People usually require you to sit in their room until the film gets finished (according to me a good bargain. You as I said, you can accept the invitation or not). You can join any room from the list you want and shift to another one if you find that another room is better. Ususlly it's better to join the ones who invite you when you are in their queue, as such folks are usually much more kind...

And yes, for movies, you usually have to sit for a long time in a queue before they get started. In movie rooms, they start room members and give them preference (although I have obeserved that most also upload to others in their queue, just that they immediately start room members on request)

Try to find more source by clicking onn find sources now. Select preferably only those downloads that have many users in the search results, even if no one has open slots, as in future, you'll find it easier to find the sources again (if you cancelled the downoad for some reason).

Cheers :P

Thanks,
I do use the "find sources" and try to do what you say. I've just been playing around and looked up a person u/l ing from me. they have 1800+ files. I clicked on several to d/l and they instantly were canceled. Is this someone I should cancel their u/l from me? I sent a message and asked why, and recieved no response. It's funny, they sent me a "thanks for the bandwidth" message this morning.
Go figure.
I did recieve an "invite" a while back. At that time, I didn't know what it was so I ignored it. Maybe next time I'll reply.

You said "sit in their room"  does that mean just stay "logged" on to it or chat?

Thanks for the answers to some probably "not to bright" questions   :?

hey.. it may also be that your useing all your upload speed, there for killing your download speed.. when shareing try to share wisely.. set it to just below your upload capacity(so for instance if your max upload was 30KB/s, try setting it to about 28-30KB/s) and then try to download.. this may help with down speeds but NOT ques

You can change your bandwith setings by going to settings and then bandwith throttle.

Untick the box infront of "Limit incoming bandwidth"
then tick the box infront of "Limit outgoing bandwidth and fill the box with a number, like in the screenshot below.

I agree with James to a point.. although rather then arbitrarily picking a number to limit it to I'd suggest you go to this page with WinMX Off .. test your speeds then follow the recommendation..

Many people who share movies also typically don't allow a person to queue up more than one file at a time. So that's why you got cancelled. To prevet the problem, go to Settings>Queueing and set the downloads per user to one. Upon finishing a file from that user, you'll go to the next one...
Don't think that if a person does not reply, its because he's greedy or something. It's simply that most of us are not around 24x7 in front of the computer to babysit winmx...

Don't fret about invites, they'll keep coming up...

yes sit in the room means stay logged on... Unfortunately I sometimes cannot come up with the online equivalents to virtual rooms

As for "if I should cancel"
All I can say is do as you please. I'd recommend leaving him as he is as personaly, I have goten much more joy from sharing rather than not sharing....

And please try out what James has said. For the recommended settings, go to:
https://www.winmxworld.com/scripts/bandwidth/
Before going, close all internet using applications including winmx...

If you want to moniter your uploads (to remove people who share 9 files and all), go here:

James and Me Here,
I read almost all the tutorials after I d/l Winmx, did the "suggested settings" (or something like that)  and I know I did the bandwidth check and set it at what it suggested. I will check it again (when I get home).

Sam,
When I tried to get a D/L from someone that was U/L ing from me, I only tried "1" at a time. None of them worked. I also tried several of the users 1 at a time to no avail. BTW, I didn't cancel anyone :)

One last question, I am at work and installed winmx to see if I could see "myself" at home. I know my winmx is running there, I know what was D/Ling,  what I am qued in, AND what's in my library. I have done several searches to find my home computer and/or library, but don't see/find it anywhere. I wanted to see how others saw me....as in "whois".  I also tried a search in hotlists of my user name and nothing. Could it be a setting at home? Is there a different way to search for it?
I am 99.999% positive of my "name" on winmx at home......but, no ones perfect :)

I would like to thank everyone who has taken the time to respond to my questions, you guy's are great
It is much appreciated.

Enduroman

hi enduroman

Searching for users (including by not limited to another pc of you) is nearly impossible on this network.  Its decentralized and regular query word searches are not 'global'.  Most searches will only travel 8 hops.. meaning 8 primary nodes connected to you.. there are hundreds of thousands of these primary nodes on the network so i think you can imagine how it might be like finding a needle in a hay stack to just find your other pc on a regular search.

Since you mention you've done some reading you may have come across the Searching with HASH's page, a hash search is almost global much farther reaching then the typical search.  Of course this would require that your Work PC had a partial file matching one shared on the home pc.  Below is a much simpler way to find yourself and check..

The best way for you to 'see the ''Whois'' as others do' is to enter a chat room and right click your own name in the user list and choose browse.  Your more then welcome to come to the help room we have on WinMX to do this if you like.

WinMxWorld.com Help_E3D7EFD50D3D

Click the chat button on WinMX, in the Filter bar on the top of the page copy and paste this name and numbers (being sure no extra spaces are on the end), then find the Join Button located far right, click that and it should deliver you unto our help room.  Your welcome to ask quesions there if you like.. or simply come in to browse yourself.  There will be a user list on the right side.. simply find your name, right click.. choose browse.

I think this could be helpful also in getting your other issues sorted as we can do test transfers to see whats going on.. up or down.

Else connecting to an opennap server is a good way of finding yourself as opennap servers have centralised indexes of users and hence, finding them is easy

I had this one instance of a user u/loading from me and browsed him/her found a file that i liked and clicked on it to d/load only to have them "red" out w/ cancelled. I sent them a message asking why to find out they had me on ignore...all this time they were still d/loading from me??!?!??!?

Well, some people don't like when other's queue up more than one file from them...
So mxmoniter/leechhammer cancels them.
Go to settings>queuing and set the number of downlaods per user to one. I should think then that this problem will never occur again.

Cheers :P

You will also want to make sure that your Auto Enter Que settings are high enough that you get into thier que.  Say for example your settings allow you in ques of 10 or less.. (default) and his que line is say 20 users.. then you will instantly turn red and he will never see you .. attempts to make connections are not seen until after you get into Que.

So make sure yours are set high enough.. Settings > Search > Default Download Parameters ..click where is says Auto Enter QUe - 10 or may say aeq - remember previous.. and choose a high number 50 - 100.
