winmx freezing in spurts
« on: March 07, 2007, 11:28:16 pm »
I have no problem connecting, but after a short time, all activity stops for anywhere from a couple of seconds to 15  or more seconds. Even the timer freezes until it starts registering again, then the timer goes from where it froze, to the added interval of suspension. The same thing happens when playing a file- the sound freezes then picks up after a pause, sometimes repeating a few seconds of what already played then resumes to normal until it freezes again. It all used to work flawlessly until just recently. To my knowledge, nothing was changed on the computer. I am using v3.54 with windows xpsp2. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Minniemofan,

Welcome to the site.

I have a few questions for you..

Are you running WinMX as primary or secondary?
Does this seem to have any corelation with searches or browse.. anything your doing?
What Patch are you using?
Do you have Peerguardian or PGLite Installed?

I have a secondary connection and yes this symptom occurs on pretty much all functions with the computer, such as scrolling is not posssible for an interval, even typing, the display of letters can be delayed, then suddenly they appear all at once. I have also noticed that most people have trouble uploading. Most of the time if they do connect, the speed is very slow and usually stops after a while then disconnects.
I'm not sure what patch I have although the toolbar indicates "patch operational". Unfortunately for me, I fell prey to a pay to get winmx back after enjoying it for a couple of years before the crash- I was unaware that it was available free. As far as Peerguardian or PGLite, I do not know. I hope you can help restore the service as it was. Thanks for your time.

Sorry to hear about the pay sites Minniemofan   :(

It sounds like something on the Computer is using alot of your CPU or virual memory.  This could be other programs your running while you use WinMX or it could be even spyware or trojans.

Its probably best to look at your task manager and see what files are using alot of your memory, you can do this by clicking the CTL + ALT + Del keys all at one time on most systems.  The Task Manager will appear, click on the process tab and look down the list to see what is using the most resources.

Here is a page with information to help you look through those and decide what is naughty and what is Nice.. and also has some infomation and links for online virus scans.  I recommend you do those and then retry WinMX.  It also would be nice to know 'typically' what other programs you use normally while you use WinMX that might be affecting this too..

Virus Information

Let me know how this goes of if you have other questions along the way...

Thanks for the tips, I found something called "bonjour service" running and since I didn't know what it was, I deleted it and now winmx runs great, other than uploading is still a problem, and I would like to share my files.

For now Minniemofan,

Open WinMX, then click Settings > Incoming TCP.. set this to Unable to Listen on...
Then click on In/Out UDP and do the same.. set to Unable..

Now restart WinMX.. making sure you have files shared .. and see if this doesnt improve your uploads to other ppl and sharing..
