how does winmx recognise incomplete files?

Greetings all,

I am sure there is a simple solution to my problem, but I'm afraid it evades me. Please excuse my incompetence.

1. I search for a file and am given a list of files matching my search criteria, then I select the fileI want, but the filename contains wierd characters and I get a file error in my transfers window and the file is not created in my incoming files folder.

2. To get around (1) above, I right click the file in the search window, select "manually download", then "manually browse for the file to resume fromm", type in a short file name, eg, "myfile". A file "myfile" is created in my incoming files folder and also appears in my transfers window.

3. Here is where my problem starts. If I restart winmx "myfile" disappears from my transfers window, and when I click "load incomplete" it doesn't reappear. I try changing the name of "myfile" to "__incomplete__myfile" but this doesn't help.

How do I get winmx to recognise my new file as being an incomplete file and load it into the transfers window?

in most cases it's due to a filename length issue (rather than the characters themselves causing problems, which most systems can handle), try setting your winmx incoming directory to somewhere with a shorter path

Also when your renaming said files to 'myfile' .. if you choose to do this still.. be very sure not to remove the numbers after the name.. that is the HASH WinMX uses to recognise the file.

example:
__INCOMPLETE___Some Show that is surely free - band - Filenameofit6b0c8ea5fc3777bbbd2e8f3b59e54e61005f200000d00000ac44000000ef.mp3
When you rename this should look like:
__INCOMPLETE___myfile6b0c8ea5fc3777bbbd2e8f3b59e54e61005f200000d00000ac44000000ef.mp3

or
myfile6b0c8ea5fc3777bbbd2e8f3b59e54e61005f200000d00000ac44000000ef.mp3

the hash on the filename is added after you start downloading, when you manually give it a filename to save to it doesn't add that to the name...

thanks for your replies KM & mehere, but I still can't get winmx to recognise the file as incomplete.

When I originally attempted to download the file I got a "file error >(2)" and so no file was actually created in my incoming folder. I cleared this entry from my transfers window, then did the manual download thing described earlier which actually created a file and commenced the download.

This file name did not conain the "hash>" details, but the download proceeded.

When I restart winmx, this entry didn't appear in the transfers window, so I click "load incomplete" and it doesn't load the file.

I tried changing the filename by prefixing it with "___INCOMPLETE__" and appending the hash information from the search window (I located the file & did a search for alternates which gave me this information) at the end of the filename, but I still can't load the file with "load incomplete".

The only way I can recommence the download is to search for the file, then manually restart it rom my existing partial file.

I hope this makes sense to you.  I would really like to find out why winmx isn't recognising this file as icomplete.

it adds the file hash and size on to the filename, and for mp3 files also the bitrate/frequency/duration, if the file doesn't have the correct incomplete name winmx won't load it again on startup as an incomplete (it needs that info to be able to find sources anyway...)

if you've changed it to a shorter path length to confirm that's not a problem then it may be the symbols, normally it's very rare for that to cause a problem so if it's for more than just one file then i'd suggest setting your system to use a different character set for unicode data, in control panel under regional and language settings in advanced you can change the default character set to something else and see if that helps (i'd suggest changing it to a character set for whichever language files you are trying to get)
