Any site that can test if ISP is blocking 6699 outbound?
« on: April 07, 2007, 11:32:49 am »
Using an ISP that makes my connection via a "LAN" - so there's no way I can accept TCP or UDP inbound, and have WinMX so configured.

Was downloading & uploading via the secondary connection - until today when anyone who tries to download from me gets
Connection timed out

I haven't had any success in downloading.
I can BROWSE users (but, by looking at my Comodo Firewall connection, that's done via my connection to the Primary on port 9541).

I think my ISP may have blocked port 6699 outbound. Is there anyway I can verify this?

Also, if I try to do a WHOIS on a user, I see nothing. No popup window like I used to. On the WinMX toolbar area, a tab-button with a Question Mark '?' appears for the user I try and do a WHOIS on, but clicking it does nothing, and it is impossible to get rid of this tab-button except for exiting WinMX. Any idea of what that is?

(nevermind - I figured out a test and have confirmed that my ISP is blocking 6699 outbound ----
What I did was WinXP Remote Access to another computer, then modified the router at that remote site to forward public port 6699 to a remote computer on the router with private port 3389. disconnect and tried to RemoteAccess using port 6699 - I don't reach the remote site at all.  Reconnected via 3389, and changed the entry in router from 6699 to 6999, disconnect and tried remote access to 6999 and it works, so have confirmed ISP is blocking 6699 which now prevents most people from downloading from me (since most are set up to use 6699), and also prevents me from downloading from most users as well....!

^^^^ that is a good site for testing ports
Sorry to hear about this problem :(((
But just see if your ISP throttles parttime or fulltime... (Which is perhaps the only option left as others might block it full time)

Cheers :P
Reconnect to winmx with the blocking patch :)

Spread the word now :)

sam: that's for testing inbound connections only...

rfrist: i'd suggest calling your ISP to complain, and also point out that by controlling which content you are allowed to access they lose all legal protections for passive unknowing ISPs, and in fact become legally responsible for anything illegal their customers do, so if they want to stay out of trouble then they should stop censoring what you can and can't do and they will get back the protection of being merely a passive provider

the law offers protection to ISPs as they have no control over what you do, however if they censor traffic then they automatically lose that protection (as they are taking control over what traffic passes through their network, rather than blindly forwarding all traffic) and become legally liable for the traffic over their network

you point out the legal problems to the right person and the ISP will stop censoring straight away, of course trying to talk to the right person in the first place can be difficult with a large ISP
