Here we see Microsofts latest effort to get folks using the less than consumer friendly Vista Operating System.

Windows XP will stop being available on new PCs from the end of January 2008.
Microsoft is keeping to a plan to stop selling the operating system even though surveys show a lukewarm response to Windows Vista among consumers.

A poll by US market research firm Harris Interactive found that only 10% of those questioned were planning to upgrade to Vista in the near future.
All versions of XP, including those made for media centre or tablet PCs, are affected by the decision.

Microsoft has confirmed that from 31 January 2008 large PC makers, such as Dell, HP and Toshiba, will no longer be able to buy licences for the software so they can install it on new machines.

Mr Epstein said withdrawing XP licences had no implications for long-term technical support for the product.
"This is purely about availability of brand new licences for brand new machines," he said. "We'll continue to support XP for some considerable time."
He added that PC makers could get hold of licences until 2009 if they bought them from third-party suppliers rather than Microsoft

This is a sure sign Vista is a lemon, we havent seen this sort of frenzied activity from Microsoft before, when other systems where released, there was a slow withdrawal from the market place, this in contrast is a move designed to shock and scare folks into buying a buggy and bloated system that seems to be hacked and cracked before its packed

perhaps the solution to this sort of bully boy monopolistic tactic would be to allow free distribution of obsolete software that is no longer available to buy legitimately... now that really would make them think

it's not the first time they've done it, they did it with the last pile of crap they released as well

they released ME and nobody wanted it so nobody bought it

they released XP which people wanted even less... but this time they withdrew windows 98 from new computers, and forced XP on them instead... so people had no choice

it's not exactly something new, they are using the exact same tactics they used with XP

while i think the tactic of forcing people to pay for something if they want it or not does work quite well for M$, i think a better tactic would be the "make something decent" method of selling... microsoft seem to disagree though

Well the day i am forced to change to vista will be the day I learn linux, thier are so many gui based linux versions popping up out of nowhere at the mo i cant see a reason why anybody would want that pile of crap, The only feature i like on the vista is the multiple screens for flicking back and forward between programms and some of the linux versions did that before vista was a thought,

Never seen that reactOS before just hada look at it loks really interesting, im seriously considering a move to linux very soon, im sick of xp at the mo and im starting to get a gut feeling it wont be long before we start to see xp having major problems trying to force us into making a upgrade to vista. What would you advise as a total newb to linux, i would like one with a good gui so my partner can use it still, and ive looked at open office before which will be great for continuing her college work.
