Router related probs
« on: April 24, 2007, 09:22:42 am »
I have 2 problems:

My router is not listed on Port Forward.com and since I've had it installed my connection is snail slow.

Router model MSI RG54SE

I looked at the other MSI models but none of the option settings come close to what I have. I don't see "Virtual Server" for instance and lots more and am too unsure to just go by instinct.
I have 2 pcs hooked on to the router atm and will be connecting another.

My internet connection is REALLY bad since I have the router hooked onto my pc. What should I do?

When I go to speed test sites it shows that my speed is okay, but my LAN status shows the that packets sent and received are real slow and each IE window I open takes ages to load. YM disconnects and reconnects all the time. WinMX connects but cls and uls don't work because I can't find an open TCP port.

p.s.   I heard that my ISP is throttling filesharing programs by using Traffic Shaping using a "key". Seems to me that they blocked WinMX completely though because even before I installed the router I had problems with WinMX. Are they allowed to do that? and if so, is there a way to get around it.... ?
I for my part think it's quite a cheek if they did block WinMX completely because I pay enough for my hi speed  "INTERNET"  connection and nothing in the contract with them mentions that there are limits to what I use my bandwidth for.....  So I'll be complaining on many of my ISP message boards about that. If I only needed my internet connection to read emails, I wouldn't need hi speed which costs so much...   :!:

p.p.s. Are there any port forwarding instruction sites in German ?

Hi Nightingale,

We do have a german speaking moderator and if you would post some screen shots of your router maybe she could help guide you through the set up of the ports.  If you dont know how to make screen shots its really easy

Method 1:
Open MSPaint and minimize, open screen you want shot of and then click the 'Print Screen' key.. Open Paint back up and right click choose 'Paste' or click the 'Edit' button top right and choose Paste there.  Save the picture as a .png or jpeg.  Then upload it here as an attachment

Method 2:
Download this file, free screen capture program i use myself alot.
http://www.progency.com/download/srip32.zip
Install it and then open the program, Open your screen you want pictures of and then open the screen rip tool, select 'Capture Image' there you can get active window.. or rectangle section.
Once you have captured the screen save it as .jpeg and then attach it here.

We really need anything past the login screen of your router, and if you do have an advanced settings then thats the way to go.

As far as getting around the throttling, yes they can do this in most cases they have a 'Fair Use' policy and can limit heavy users according to this.  Some ppl have found that these Fair Use Policies were not in effect when they signed on to an ISP so this would make you exempt from such.. however in most cases they 'can' do this.. and your best option is to find a new ISP.  The software they use to do this we cant get 'around' at this time so changing ports and things that used to work dont any more :S

Hi Me

Thanks a lot for your fast reply. :)

partial update....

I just called my provider now again to ask for a second IP number because I assumed then I wouldn't need the router as well.... (silly me?? lol)  Anyway,  the tech who picked up the phone didn't "appear" too well informed how things work... He told me to call MSI - (my router firm) - and also said that I would still need the router hooked on to both pcs - (I'll be changing to wireless soon... so I expect a new problem then... but first things first... lol) ... He said that my speed probs are only router related.

I also asked why they're blocking filesharing programs as I'd read that on some forums in the internet... he said they don't block any nor throttle them... hmmm....  weird isn't it that some people announce that on forums and the provider tech/s say it's not true.... so now I'll need to try out all variations of the WinMX ports I guess....

Please hold thumbs

I'll be reporting here again as soon as I've managed to contact MSI and will inform Port Forward.com to maybe add that model to their list.
