You shouldent need to extract the a hosts file anywhere. The newest patch automatically overrides all old host files.

Go here: https://www.winmxworld.com/tutorials/connection.html

Then download the patch for which ever version of windows your running. Once downloaded, double click the .exe file, and keep clicking next until the installation is finished.

Then restart winmx. Wait for it to connect, if it doesent connect, then try rebooting. If it still doesent connect, let us know.

Thanks.

It doesn't connect. I have the new patch, and it's giving me the "welcome back," but it's not connecting.

I got up this morning and checked WinMX, which had been open all night, and voila! It was connected, I was queued, and there were six people downloading. Hooray! Thanks everyone :)

Hi Infrontofputer,

Id like you to open your WinMX in Program files for me first.

C:\Program Files\WnMX folder  in this folder you should have a file called  OLEDLG.DLL and id like you to not only make sure its there but to also hover your mouse over it and make sure the date sayd this month of this year.

If this says 2006 on it then the correct patch has not installed.  Please reinstall making sure during install that you select the correct directory with your WinMX.exe file in it.   Usually C:\Program Files\WinMX\
If the date IS correct then please restart your winmx for me, wait for a moment.  If you dont get the green light turn it off and repeat.. until you do.

Post back here and let us know.

When useing the patch on a win98se machine, I found that reseting the DNS allowed me to connect without waiting. To do this on win98 click start, run, type
"winipcfg" (without the quotes) click ok. Click the drop down arrow and look for your LAN card name and click on it. You know you have the right one if all the spaces have numbers in them. Now click "relaese all" then click "renew all". Restart winmx and it should connect in seconds.

Ok Infrontofputer,

I can see what the problem was and you may have it almost sorted..
Here is what i want you to now do.. ok maybe i should ask first do you want to continue to run that version?  its older version and will run fine, if you dont use Chat functions.  Most chat rooms these days have color and that version of WInMX cant read them.

Lets do this:
If you want to keep that version and get it to connect do this
1. download the appropriate patch from here (if you dont have it saved to your PC)  https://www.winmxworld.com/tutorials/connection.html
2. Install this patch with WinMX closed.
3. When it asks for a location to install to be sure it says this exactly: C:\Program Files\WinMX\
* if there are extrabits on the end of that remove them
4. At this time its a good idea to remove WinMX from your firewall rules and allow it to ask on the next step.  This ensures the changes we made havent caused your firewall to lock it out.
5. When its installed completely run WinMX.
6. post back and let me know...

If you want to get the newer version of WinMX 3.54 beta 4 installed and working do this:
1. Download this file:  httpss://archive.winmxworld.com/WinMX/Beta/3.54%20betas/winmx354beta4.zip
2. WinMX Off, unzip its contents to this location C:\Program Files\WInMX (NOTE: Do not run this file, it simply replaces the winmx.exe in the folder)
3. If it asks would you like to overwrite the files say  Yes.
4. Download the appropriate patch installer from here (if you dont already have it):    https://www.winmxworld.com/tutorials/connection.html
5  When it asks for a location to install to be sure it says exactly this: C:\Program FIles\WinMX\
* if there are extrabits on the end of that remove them
6. At this time its a good idea to remove WinMX from your firewall rules and allow it to ask on the next step.  This ensures the changes we made havent caused your firewall to lock it out.
7. When its installed completely restart WinMX.
Post back to me here and let me know..

Incidently, the reason you cant see the OLEDLG.DLL  file in your folders is Windows considers it a protected files.  The way to fix that is this
Open a Windows Explorer box.. like say My Computer, now you see the Tools button top left of screen.  Click this and choose Folder Options, now click on teh View tab in the new box.  Scroll down to Hidden files and folders
Untick 'Do Not Show Hiddn Files Or Folders'
Tick 'Show Hidden Files and Folders'
Untick 'Hide Extentions for Known File Types'
Untick 'Hide protected operating system files (not recommended)'

Then click Apply to all folders, then click Apply, and OK

You should now be able to see hidden items and this is a good idea as many viruses like to hide themselves and you can now view the files in the WinMX folder too.  When the instructions above this are done you should see inside the C:\Program Files\WinMX  folder a file named OLEDLG.DLL, same location as the winmx.exe file.
