Uploads time out
« on: June 26, 2007, 09:38:50 am »
My downloads work fine but the uploads all timeout, I have changed to another ISP, I have Dynalink RTA 1320 DSL modem and then into a D-Link DI-704UP router the only change was the modem as I had a special wireless modem before. I did have to change the router to DHCP enabled. I have set the ports on the modem and the router.
Any ideas on how to fix this?  PLEASE!

Hi Woogle,

You'll have to disable the NAT in the modem and set it to bridge mode, usually there will be method instructions in the documentaion you recived on the disk that came with it.  This will alow the NAT to be handled by the router and the settings there to be effective.

WinMX cant work correctly through double nat situtaions.

alternatively you could replace the router with a network switch, & simply forward using the modem's NAT, switches are cheap

yes it can, it can function perfectly fine behind as many NATs as you like

Well yes KM but it's also fair to say it's very unusual to need more than one NAT device & beyond the typical user to configure for such situations, far easier to simplify the setup to the single NAT device that's actually needed to share the connection...

it's simpler to configure 1 NAT than 10, but WinMX won't care either way and will work the same through any number, so to say winmx has a problem with it is untrue...

Let me rephrase this .. since you want to nit pick..

WinMX cant work properly through specific ports (as it should be set up) with more then one NAT device trying to direct those specific ports.  One or more of the NAT devices will need to be configured to allow the traffic to pass through onto the Device that is configured to allow those specific ports.
Or.. WinMX will have to be configured to 'Not' use specific ports and stay set in Passive Secondary mode, not ideal.

Gawd.. im so glad we needed to say all that instead of just what I already said.

in fact it will work properly only if both NAT devices are directing inbound packets for those ports to the correct internal host, if they are not configured to direct it somewhere then it won't work... try rephrasing again :-P

gee, is there a point to this padantic attitude...........
yes winmx will work behind as many NAT enabled devices that are correctly set up that you may have on a network...........
but having 10 nats doesnt make you any more secure then the one, so it is far better to disenable all the other NAT enabled devices and only have the one, makes for better configuration and reliabilty in the long run on small home or office networks, which is the typical setup used on winmx...........
so the setup susgested by me_here is correct................
but all this coming from someone who doesnt believe in firewalls or anti virus, im surprised your not telling this user to disenable everything, after all winmx will work really well if theres no NAT enabled devices or firewalls to get in the way................

hit chat, paste this in the filter bar

hit join
someone should be able to ask all the needed questions to find where the issue is

failing that, check firewall rules & settings for norton 2005/6 (if installed)
recheck port forwarding rules CAREFULLY
