domain names and fxserv
« on: May 18, 2007, 11:28:27 pm »
is there any way to use a domain name with fxserv....i have a dynamic ip and a domain name furnished by no-ip.com.  no-ip.com also checks my ip from time to time and updates my domain name.  i want to use a domain name to host a room instead of an ip.  that would allow my room address to always be the same.  any help would be great.   thanks.   :D

No thats not possible, the room hash is generated from IP Address & Port Number and the only way a room can be accessed is either in hash format or _IP:port

winmx chat protocol limitation, not just fx.  if fx provided some means of doing what you ask, no one would be able to join... :/

Same here Beard... but I am lucky, my Dynamic address hasn't changed in over 2 months, so that is a good sign...

I am always checking so I can point my site domain name to the new IP when it does change

I was with an ISP that only charged an extra $10 a month for static, but they weren't fast enough, so I switched to RoadRunner :)

* KM wonders why bearded blunder is complaining about not having a static IP

a dynamic IP that only really changes if either you force a change or go offline for several days isn't really much of a problem... get the advantages of both types, advantages of an IP Address that doesn't change all the time, with the advantages of being able to change it if you want

basically my chatroom restart automation wasn't up to reinserting the bots if my ip changed during a power outage (as has happened a few times) a static ip would save me having to re-write that, & pay no-ip to track my ip for the domain i'm hosting on (free for one of theiir hosts.. pay for your own domain)

have your bots join Your Room Name_1F00007F0003 (change the last four digits to match the last 4 digits of your room)

Lol, my dynamic ip has been the same for over 2 years. But my other ip address, always seems to change every time i turn the other computer on. It isn't on all the time like this one is which proves what km says.

yes i know all about using loopback, however it screws up the %ROOMNAME% variable in metis if you use it in output..
i just have to improve the room rebuild script, which i've about done..

i probably would have approached it from the metis side (replace operator?), but if you've got it working then that's all that matters = )
