Industry Dirty Tricks Expanded in Canada
« on: May 26, 2007, 09:49:00 am »
After not being successful in obtaining draonian new laws to protect their movies the media industry is trying the backdoor approach yet again, this time using the standby scare-all, mention paedophilia.

Quote
Fresh off unsubstantiated claims that Canada is a piracy haven, the media is now reporting that Canada is also a "pedophile haven."  At least two groups are quoted in a CTV article claiming that Canada has lax laws and should require Internet service providers to take stronger action against pedophile and child porn sites.  Moreover, Conservative MP Art Hanger infers that the law should be changed to require ISPs to report sites, even if they are not illegal.

Pedophelia and child pornography are obviously unconscionable and all countries should have strong laws to criminalize such behaviour.  To my knowledge, there is no reason to think that Canada falls short in this regard.  Not only are there criminal code provisions to address these issues, but Canadian ISPs voluntarily launched the controversial Project Cleanfeed initiative to block child pornography images.  Moreover, the OpenNet Initiative summary of Canada and the U.S. leaves no reason to believe that U.S. ISPs face stricter scrutiny or liability for this form of conduct (several U.S. law initiatives have been struck down as unconstitutional).  Everyone wants to find effective tools for addressing this issues, but misleading and inaccurate characterizations of Canadian law is simply not the way to do it.

As this is an emotive subject the media are seeking to use the natural disgust of folks to its advantage to get new laws inplace that they can coat-tail on to add new anti piracy legislation, legislation that has been time and again proved unecessary, whilst I,m sure we shall see more politicians jumping on the bandwagon at some point to express concern over this matter it seems control of internet content is the true aim, after all most countries already have initiatives and heavy penalties for those involved in this evil trade, to use this issue as a smokescreen to introduce poor and unfair legislation is an insult to all who are already trying to put an end to child abuse.

It sickens me for the media to use such a serious issue as a pawn in their game to change laws that have nothing to do with it.

If they can't force countries to help them rape all the money from it's citizens, they will make the country look bad with subjects such as this.

How pathetic.

One day the media empire will crumble, because people are sick of this sort of behavior.
