South Korea To Enact Anti p2p Legislation At US Behest
« on: May 31, 2007, 08:56:41 am »
New country old news really folks.

http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20070530-south-korea-agrees-to-target-p2p-services-in-agreement-with-us.html

Quote
Korean peer-to-peer users, prepare for a new "joint investigation team" that can operate "at the request of a right holder" to shut down any web sites that "permit the unauthorized reproduction, distribution, or transmission of copyright work."

Last week, the US and South Korea released the proposed text of the Free Trade Agreement between the two countries.

While it seems reasonable enough to shut down sites that traffic exclusively in unauthorized copyrighted material, the letter says that even sites which simply "permit" such activity could be closed. This suggests that even sites or applications with substantial non-infringing uses might feel the heat if they are also used for illicit file-sharing.

The agreement has aroused opposition in Korea, and groups in the US are also examining the agreement and formulating a response.
The Electronic Frontier Foundation tells Ars that they are "still crunching the legal analysis on this," but they also worry about the possibility that sites with legitimate uses could be targeted.

Its become a bit of a joke to see the US bullying other countries into signing agreements that would not be legal in their own country, of course this gives the clear message to many that this is not just a war on p2p its a purely greed lead monopoly extension method hiding under the guise of the copyright/anti piracy laws.

It seems to me that global copyright and other poorly worded pro monopoly laws should recognise the rights of free speech and expression of thought and not criminalise those who have not infringed upon the so called "intellectual" property of others, merely having the tools to do so should not in itself be something anyone should be penalised for.

Imagine a world folks where you could have an idea or concept and not find someone else has a license for that idea that lasts longer than your lifetime, what a sick world we live in where creativity/humanity is held back and those claiming "ownership" of ideas are allowed to generate an overlarge amount of money merely because they where born before you were.
