ATHENS, Ga. (AP) -- The Recording Industry Association of America has filed lawsuits against 15 people at the University of Georgia, claiming they illegally downloaded copyrighted music from the Internet.
Knowing their Internet addresses, but not their names, RIAA lawyers filed "John Doe" lawsuits Wednesday in US District Court, claiming the individuals illegally distributed copyrighted music on the Internet via peer-to-peer services such as LimeWire.
RIAA members plan to subpoena the university for the names of the people who used the university's Internet provider addresses.
The lawsuits come after the RIAA and some of its members offered to settle with 19 UGA Internet users whom the association claims illegally downloaded music using university Internet connections. But 15 did not respond, prompting the lawsuits.
