Time-Warner/ Road Runner "Traffic Shaping"

Yet another of the big ISP's are announcing their desire to hit p2p and other users that might require a reasonable service ( like the sort they signed up for).

TIME WARNER ANNOUNCES INTRODUCTION OF PACKET SHAPING TECHNOLOGY NATIONWIDE

June 6, 2007 -- Time Warner today implemented a network management tool to improve the operation of the network for all subscribers. As a result, a small minority of users may experience slower speeds during peak hours when using certain applications that consume lots of bandwidth. You can address this situation by reducing your use of bandwidth-intensive applications during peak hours. "Peak hours" are generally in the evenings.

"Packet shaping" technology has been implemented for newsgroup applications, regardless of the provider, and all peer-to-peer networks and certain other high bandwidth applications not necessarily limited to audio, video, and voice over IP telephony. Road Runner reserves the right to implement network management tools for other applications in the future.

Now dont forget folks you are just customers and nothing more, if Time Warner need extra bandwidth to offer new video bandwidth hogging services and yours is the only capacity they have spare then you best just shut up and allow it like Virgin Media's customers are doing

This general trend of offering a service and then introducing some form of limiting/throttling when the majority of the users need it only seems to hilight the  urgent need for ISP reinvestment before they start losing disgruntled existing customers, although I,m sure once this news is more widespread they may find they have been a tad  too slow in resolving this basic problem that their business should address urgently.

*wonders* If I am in that elite few where they are doing that or its just everyone and they are too chicken sh*t to say so! I only pay 120 / month and that is my tv programming as well that is included. However, they just recently taken over here we were Adelphia b4 that. I have always had stable service through them so I am wondering if that will be changing now.

Sam here FlyGirl :(
Was Adelphia (which I didn't really like anyway too much, even though they were stable, had bad customer service) and since RR took over here, it has been great, but now with this news, I dunno what to expect.

I may be changing ISPs before long if they really cause too much trouble with limiting my BW...

Best Regards, and Be Good!
