a simple question...
« on: July 13, 2007, 08:09:48 pm »
I used winmx for years until I bought a new comp this past week. I never paid any attention to the behind the scenes stuff that was going on because, quite simply, it was over my head...to be honest, I can't even keep straight the different sites giving advice anymore.

here's my question...I installed winmx again on this new comp using this url https://www.winmxworld.com/tutorials/connection.html
I installed version WInMX v3.54 Patched. So, am I good to go? I'm using vista. I no longer need peerguardian right? this version contains EVERYTHING I need to go have fun on the network again, right?

Sorry if this is a redundant question, but like I said, there's too much to keep up with if you're not into details...

For the person that is not to into details .. my best answer

Simply is YES.. your good to go.
When you installed you may have noticed a tick box to use a special patch for Vista users.  This will correct a problem 'some' Vista users experience on secondary with WinMX and frequent disconnections.  If you have any problesm and are not sure if you 'ticked' that box.. just reinstall over the existing MX, and of course tick that box.

You dont need Peerguardian, you dont need anything else but some good ole MX fun..

small note: "that box" overrides the "normal" choice for the windows version detected..
vista users therfore get the revised patch by default & ticking the box may *cause* the problems
* Bearded Blunder forgives Me Here you'd need to run the installer ON Vista to see the message beside that box is different...
Blessed is he who expecteth nothing, for he shall not be disappointed.

Thanks for the info!
Sorry I didn't get a chance to say so earlier.
I do have one more question...are I.P's able to be tracked on winmx? I got hit on torrents with a warning letter which I assume came from recording my I.P. Can they see it on Winmx?

Your ip shows wherever you go online.. it's not *quite* as easy to get on winmx as bit-torrent.. but if you download your ip has pretty much to show.. else the party sending data wouldn't know where to send it...

I've not heard of warning letters being sent to winmx users.. i certainly wouldn'y concern myself unless/until such a thing did arrive...

As bearded blunder said your ip shows whenever you go online, static or not it can still be traced back to you but also as he said there has not been any warnings to his knowledge to winmx users.
being a long term user myself neither have i so i wouldnt go worrying yourself just yet. as for the warning letter on torrents are you sure its just not a hoaxer prios as there was some fools on winmx a couple of years back going into rooms and pming all sorts of official sounding rubbish.
the most likely warning you will get is from your isp telling you that you are breaking there fair usage policy just to try wind your connection down so you dont get to enjoy what you are paying for

I'm considering a dedicated line with a static IP,  no restrictions, I have a similar concern regarding getting in any mess.

I doubt it was a hoax. It was a letter from Comcast warning me they had recieved notice of my i.p engaged in  copyright infringement. The first letter was about the movie The 300. The second letter, several months later was about episodes of the Office. All from Mininova, both azureus and utorrents were used. Anyway, if they come after me, so be it, I'll take what's rightfully coming.

What many do not know about their ISP's is that some are in league with the media companies or are in fact owned by those same media companies, these companies often dispatch letters of this sort without any real shred of proof of infringing activity, and to infringe on their copyright you have to have uploaded a perfect digital copy of their product, after all this is their claim in most cases, downloading only is not something they chase folks for, merely uploaders.

If your using bit torrent its a fact your uploading while downloading but even this does not mean you have supplied them with a full copy of any title you happened to test for quality, whilst I encourage no one to infringe copyright I also think you should know your rights before confessing or admitting to anything just because some lazy lawyer tries to scare you with demands whilst sitting in a plush office scaring old folks and children.
